Alumni . 2019 Alumni Exhibition
It is with great excitement that the Cleveland Institute of Art and the CIA Alumni Council announce the juried 2019 Alumni Exhibition. The Alumni Council introduced this community-building tradition for CIA alumni last year. In response to a survey, many alumni expressed the wish for a chance to show their work at CIA. Last year's debut was a joyful event that not only highlighted art and design excellence, but provided alums a welcome opportunity to reconnect.
The show will run July 12 through August 16 in the Reinberger Gallery. Submissions will be accepted March 1 through April 1, and all alumni are encouraged to apply.
The juror for this year’s show is Courtenay Finn, a 2005 CIA grad and the chief curator at moCa Cleveland. Prior to joining moCa, she was senior curator at the Aspen Art Museum (AAM) in Aspen, Colorado, where she curated the group exhibitions Lost Without Your Rhythm (2018), Gravity & Grace (2017), The Revolution Will Not Be Gray (2016-17), A Fragile But Marvelous Life (2015-16), Stories We Tell Ourselves (2015-16), The Blue of Distance (2015), and The Future Yesterday (2014-15), alongside solo presentations by Margaret Kilgallen (2019), Zoe Crosher (2018), Haris Epaminonda (2017), Mickalene Thomas (2016), Anna Sew Hoy (2015-16) and Alice Channer (2014-15).
Please apply to the exhibition using the following link: cia.edu/alumniexhibitionform. Submissions from artists working in all media are welcome to apply. Up to three (3) pieces can be submitted digitally by April 1, 2019. All artwork submitted must be original work made within the last two years. There is no specific size limitation, but keep in mind artists are responsible for delivering and making arrangements for returning their own artwork and any related costs. Please include the title, medium, and dimensions when submitting.
The submission fee is $25. ($15 is tax-deductible and will go to the Alumni Association Scholarship.)
Accepted artists will be notified in May 2019. The artist is responsible for coordinating shipping arrangements of the artwork to and from the gallery. Work must arrive in ready-to-hang condition. This means that all wall-hanging works must be affixed with proper hanging hardware, such as d-rings or cleats (no sawtooth picture hangers) and all works must be fully dry, off-gassed and cured upon delivery. All works on paper (including photographs) must be framed. Reinberger staff have the right to refuse any work that is damaged or not in hang-ready condition. Artists who require special equipment or display furniture (anything beyond a standard pedestal or shelf) may be required to use their own equipment for the exhibition. Artwork will not be insured by the Cleveland Institute of Art during transit. Accepted artists must also complete a loan agreement form (which will be emailed in May).
The opening reception for the 2019 Alumni Exhibition will take place Friday, July 12 from 5 to 8pm at the Cleveland Institute of Art.
