A team of faculty and staff from each department is working on developing the safest and most effective structure for academic delivery. They have developed these plans and guidelines.

Fall Semester 2020 begins August 17 and ends December 5

We are starting and ending the semester a week early to allow us to complete in-person instruction before Thanksgiving, thereby minimizing risks of infection following heavy holiday travel.

  • Studio critiques will take place in person November 21–24, before Thanksgiving break.
  • Liberal arts exams will take place online the week after Thanksgiving.

Students should plan to return home for Thanksgiving break and to complete Liberal Arts exams remotely.

Updated daily schedule

Small adjustments will be made to course meeting times to ease transitions between online and in-person classes and allow for cleaning time. We will share more details on this soon.

Course delivery

Studio classes will be held primarily in person (with safety modifications), with blended/hybrid online content where appropriate. To help ensure the safety of the CIA community, liberal arts classes will be held primarily in hybrid digital formats, with students completing the majority of their assignments in online classrooms and meeting occasionally for small group discussions.

Equipment Checkout

Equipment Checkout will be open and accessible to students and employees. Reservations will be made through the online portal to avoid congregating at the checkout counter.

All equipment will be cleaned with disinfecting wipes upon return.

Fabrication Studios

CIA fabrication shops will be open with modifications to enhance health and safety. More details will be forthcoming.

Jessica R. Gund Memorial Library

The Jessica R. Gund Memorial Library will reopen to the CIA community in early August with modifications to some services and physical spaces to promote social distancing.

Academic policy modifications

CIA will likely implement temporary amendments to academic policies, which may include modified pass/fail grades, attendance, and other factors. Details will be in place by the start of the academic year.

Faculty training and resources

CIA's Office of Academic Affairs is planning a training series for faculty on topics such as instructional technology, best practices in online and hybrid learning, inclusive teaching strategies, student mental health and other areas.
