Technical Specialist - Fabrication Studios (FT)

The Cleveland Institute of Art’s Fabrication Studios is seeking a full-time/academic year Technical Specialist.

The Fabrication Studios Technical Specialist (TS) reports to the Director of Fabrication Studios.

This is one of five TS positions in the department of Fabrication Studios.

The Fabrication Studios consist of a wood shop, metal shop, plastic shop, machine shop, plaster stone room, oil clay room, spray paint booth, and spray mount room. These spaces serve students from all the departments and disciplines of the Institution.

The Fabrication Studios Technical Specialist is expected to facilitate and promote a safe, productive, and accessible experience for the CIA community. Including but not limited to; students, faculty, staff, instructors, visiting artists, and other guests.

Fabrication Studios Technical Specialist Responsibilities:

  • Instruct Safety Lab training for first year and exchange students.
  • Instruct, promote, and reinforce shop safety and standard operating procedure.
  • Monitor Woodshop, Metal Shop, Plastic Shop, & Machine Shop.
  • Clean, organize, and maintain all Fabrication Studios spaces.
  • Work with students in a one on one capacity and in groups.
  • Advise and instruct students on order of operations, proper tool use, and fabrication techniques.
  • Develop and instruct workshops that supplement and support curriculum.
  • Instruct demonstrations of tools and processes for individual classes
  • Oversee tool check out and the material supply store.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, general maintenance, and repair of tools and equipment.
  • Supervision and technical training of work‐study students.
  • Provide general assistance to faculty, staff, and instructors.


• Four-year college degree in art, design, applied arts, or craft discipline
4+ years of equivalent applied experience in an art, design, applied arts, craft, or fabrication related field
• Strong communication skills; verbal, email, phone
• Competency in multiple of the following;
• Woodworking, Metal Fabrication, Plastic Fabrication, Prototyping, Mold Making, Casting, Model Making, Welding, Machining, CNC Operation, Finishing, Welding
• Competency in Microsoft Office; Word, Excel, PowerPoint
• Ability to work as part of a small team
• Reliability and dependability
• Creative problem solving – Especially related to design and fabrication processes.
• Calm and patient demeanor
• Capacity to multi-task


  • Experience with CAD/CAM software;
    • (Rhino, Fusion 360, Rhinocam, Grasshopper, SolidWorks)
  • Experience running 3-axis CNC (Shopbot, V-carve/Vectric)
  • Competency in Adobe Suite; Illustrator, Photoshop


  • Starting hourly wage rate of $15.00
  • Benefits Eligible – Medical, Vision, Dental

The position will be assigned to work 35 hours per week for 35 weeks per academic year.

Fabrication Studios Hours of Operation:

Monday – Friday: 8 am – 11 pm

Saturday: 10 am – 8 pm

Sunday: 12pm – 10 pm
