This premier visiting artist series is generously sponsored by the Cleveland Institute of Art’s George P. Bickford Fund. Free and open to the public, these lectures take place in CIA’s Aitken Auditorium of the Gund Building at 11141 East Boulevard.
Feb 15, 7pm – Nick Cave
on fashion and sound
Strategies of Performa: Scene and Unseen
Reception in Gund lobby before lecture
Nick Cave, professor and chair of fashion design at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is one of the most important artists working today. Cave’s provocative and mesmerizing works are exhibited around the world in galleries and print. Employing approaches that reference traditional craft processes, such as crochet, macramé, and sewing, he seamlessly combines these with strategies that tap into newer traditions, such as performance and social sculpture. His best-known works are his soundsuits, which combine dance, sound, and costume design. Also sponsored by CIA’s Department of Fiber + Material Studies.
Mar 15, 7pm – Clarence Morgan
on painting and abstraction
Inspiration from a Painter's Notebook
Clarence Morgan’s paintings have been exhibited on a national and international scale. His work is included in the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Art Institute, General Mills, and University of Alabama, among others. Morgan is a professor of painting in the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

on ceramic art
Industrial Interventions
Marek Cecula is an artist, designer, and educator working through the conceptual implications of ceramic objects and their meanings in contemporary culture. His work conveys his own seduction by ceramic work and the aesthetic values it carries. Born in Poland, Cecula currently lives and works in both New York and Poland. His work is included in such collections as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and Le Musee Royal de Mariemont in Belgium. Also sponsored by CIA’s Department of Ceramics.

Feb 2, 7pm – Kari Russell-Pool ’90
Accomplished glass artist and Cleveland Institute of Art graduate Kari Russell-Pool ’90 will give a presentation and slideshow about her intricate, decorative, flameworked glass art at a potluck dinner on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at 7pm in Room 104 of CIA’s Joseph McCullough Center for the Visual Arts. The talk is open to the public and participants are invited to bring a dish to share. Details here.

Lunch on Fridays Lecture Series
Spend your lunch hour learning a little more about the world of art and design at CIA’s Lunch on Friday Series. Free and open to the public, these lectures begin at 12:15 and feature a variety of artists and designers from around the world, including our own CIA faculty. This series is jointly sponsored by the CIA environments of Liberal Arts and Foundation with support from additional CIA departments.

“Poetry, Calligraphy and Landscape in Chinese Art”
Mar 25 – Tamar Harpaz, visiting artist in residency at SPACES Gallery
Tamar Harpaz (born in Jerusalem, 1979) received her BFA and MFA from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem. Harpaz's all-encompassing installations constantly try to capture fleeting moments that verge on the illusionary. Integrating intimate domestic objects with projections of light, photography and video, Harpaz constructs multifaceted visual settings that gradually and consistently unfold before our eyes. Tamar Harpaz lives and works in Tel Aviv. She received the Sharet scholarship in 2009.
