Cleveland Institute of Art photography exhibition

will bend reality, blend images for surrealistic effect

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Institute of Art will host an exhibition of photographic collages and montages this summer titled "Just Suppose: The Images of Jerry Uelsmann & Maggie Taylor," in the Reinberger Galleries, located in the Institute's Gund Building, 11141 East Boulevard.

Featuring a selection of 60 photographs by the husband and wife team of Jerry Uelsmann and Maggie Taylor, the show will run from May 16 through August 8, 2008. A public reception is scheduled for Friday, May 16, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. in the Reinberger Galleries. The Reinberger Galleries are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; closed Sunday and Monday.

Uelsmann is considered a pioneer in the field of photomontage, a process of making a composite photograph by cutting and joining a number of other photographs into a seamless photographic print. His unprecedented, non-digitized, multiple imagery, black and white photographs have been said to conjure notions of surrealism, mysticism and even the archetypes of Carl Jung.

Taylor's digital photo collages are a contemporary exploration of surrealism, a cultural movement and artistic style influenced by Jung and Sigmund Freud. She uses found materials, a digital scanner and Adobe Photoshop® to create her digital photo collages in which birds ride bicycles, wings sprout from the backs of Victorian women, and a grove of men are planted into the ground headfirst.

Uelsmann's photographs have been exhibited in more than 100 individual shows and reside in the permanent collections of major museums worldwide including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Chicago Art Institute, the International Museum of Photography at

the George Eastman House, the National Museum of American Art in Washington, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967 and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1972. He is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, a founding member of the American Society for Photographic Education, and a trustee of the Friends of Photography. He has published 10 books.

Since 1987, Taylor's still life photographs have been exhibited in more than 60 one-person exhibitions throughout the U.S. Her work is in the collections of The Art Museum, Princeton University; The Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, AZ; The Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University; Musee de la Photographie, Charleroi, Belgium; Museet For Fotokunst, Odense, Denmark; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; among others. In 1996 and 2001 Taylor received State of Florida Individual Artist's Fellowships. In 2004 she won the Santa Fe Center for Photography's Project Competition.

Uelsmann earned his bachelor of fine arts (BFA) degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1957 and his master of science (MS) and master of fine arts (MFA) degrees at Indiana University in 1960. He began teaching photography at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1960. He has been graduate research professor of art at the university since 1974. Taylor received her bachelor's degree in philosophy from Yale University and her MFA degree in photography from the University of Florida.
