2D: Enamel and Photography

Surveying the CIA-affiliated artworks in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, one can sometimes note changes in art media, in addition to changes in the predominant taste or style. For example, the groundbreaking exhibition Painting with Fire: Masters of Enameling in America, 1930-1908 (2007), curated by Bernard N. and Harold B. Nelson Jazzar, shows why American enamels then were so closely associated with the Cleveland Institute of Art. Today enameling techniques remain part of the CIA curriculum, but no longer do students major in the field.

In contrast, photography appears to be rising in importance among today’s CIA artists, whether faculty, staff, students, or alumni. Starting in the 1990s, CMA has begun adding CIA photographic work to its permanent collection, a trend that seems likely to continue, as recent graduates, faculty, and staff members are continuing to win prizes and garner positive reviews, both locally and nationally.
