Richard Heipp, Reflections on Display

This exhibition of new paintings and drawings will showcase new work all completed during my year's research leave from my duties at UF. It features 3 new series of works. The first consists of four large paintings titled "Cultural Masks." The second is a series of three paintings titled "Reflection on Beuys," and the third is a series 11 ink on paper drawings from my "Electro-Physiologie" series. The work in the exhibition centers on motifs that feature depictions of often-complex reflective surfaces or aspects of how the representations of artworks and artifacts of culture are institutionally displayed. I try to use painting to untangle the relationship between Art, craft and the conventions of display. In my "photo-centric" works, handmade images mime not only the "realism" but also the anachronism of the materiality of photographical based imagery that challenge habits of image consumption by defying the conditions of speed and indiscriminancy in which pictures are most frequently produced in contemporary culture.
