View student work from Associate Professor Kevin Kautenburger’s fall 2014 semester course, Community Works: Environment, Art, and Engaged Practice, on view at Look About Lodge in the South Chagrin reservation on Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4pm.
Talk with students, Kautenburger, and Metroparks naturalist Stefanie Verish about this field-based course, and view works in print, sculpture, and an image-based natural guidebook that depicts outdoor installations made during the semester.
The course was experiential in nature, with the students immersing themselves within the natural environment and using aspects of that experience as the basis of a self-proposed semester long project. Students worked in close consultation with the Kautenburger, Verish, a geologist, and a host of visiting artists.
Environment, Art and Engaged Practice was one of three new courses offered during the 2014-15 academic year as part of CIA's year-long focus on Community Works: Artist as Social Agent.
Look About Lodge, built in 1938 from 300 chestnut logs, features three stone fireplaces, and is adjacent to a breathtaking hemlock forest overlooking Sulphur Springs gorge.
