PLUG PROJECTS

is pleased to announce:

“HOM/EMBODY” a solo exhibition by Christa Donner

May 16 – June 22, 2014

Exhibition Opening: May 16, 6-9pm
Gallery Hours: Saturdays 10am-5pm and by appointment

PLUG Projects is pleased to present “HOM/EMBODY” a solo exhibition by Chicago-based artist, Christa Donner. Donner’s work investigates the human/animal body and its metaphors using a variety of media, ranging from small-press zines to large-scale installations. The work in this exhibition reimagines our internal architecture, drawing from the colony structures of social insects and other animals to propose both alternative anatomies and speculative models for human communities of the future.

Donner states, “Artmaking is my microscope and my scalpel: the tool I use to investigate the human organism through sensation and imagination. Using ink and paper to explore the fragile but flexible nature of the human body makes a lot of sense to me, whether it’s through the intimacy of hand-held zines, the layered illogic of collage, or the immersive qualities of large-scale drawing and installation. This visual inquiry allows me to transform personal narrative into powerful, playful, and radical re-visions of the human body.”

As part of HOM/EMBODY, Christa Donner will give a short artist talk on the exhibition and lead a generative workshop combining interview and collage to create a collaborative zine. This event will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 17, and will include participants of all ages.

Embedded in Donner’s work is an exchange between individuals and communities. These interactions, which take the form of interviews, small-press zines, and collaborative events, provoke us to consider our relationships with our bodies and each other. Donner believes, “My speculative work in the studio is amplified by the community of creative thinkers and cultural workers raising small children that I’m helping to organize, educate and advocate for and with. It exists both virtually and physically and will continue to evolve as its participants grow and change.”

About the Artist:
Christa Donner’s work is exhibited internationally, including projects for The Worldly House in dOCUMENTA 13 (Kassel, Germany); BankArt NYK (Yokohama, Japan); Chiaki Kamikawa Contemporary Art (Paphos, Cyprus); the Museum Bellerive (Zurich, Switzerland), ANTI Festival of Contemporary Art (Kuopio, Finland), the Centro Columbo Americano (Medellin, Colombia), and throughout the United States. In 2013 Donner started Cultural ReProducers, an evolving social project and online resource supporting active cultural workers who are also parents of small children: www.culturalreproducers.org.
