Mary Shelley's character Dr. Frankenstein is often misidentified with the creature he created. That could be due to the fact that creating such a hideous beast makes the doctor a sort of monster himself. On May 10th, in a new solo exhibition at Proximity, Nathan Margoni makes that distinction clear. As though emerging from a fever dream, Margoni proudly proclaims, I Am A Monster!

As a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art and holding a Masters in Fine Arts from SUNY Purchase College in New York, Margoni has a distinct way of capturing childhood fantasies and highlighting what is gross, what is funny, and what we fear. Working on a large scale, Margoni's impressive rendering skills are flanked by uncommon materials like tube socks, stuffed animals, hot glue and hair. He also employs interactive elements that invite the viewer to squeeze, pet, and animate his morbid sculptures.

As we get older our abilities to make-believe are muddied by the pretentious expectations we set for ourselves. While our fears are wrapped up in breaking news items and mounting bills, there are monsters under our beds begging for our attention. Get yourself a night-light and join us for Nathan Margoni's exhibition at Proximity, I Am A Monster.
