This beginning course will introduce architectural concepts, conventions, and techniques of both 2D and 3D representation as a fundamental medium for investigation, analysis, and documentation of objects, processes, and architectural spaces. You will develop skills in graphic visualization and representation as used in architecture through a combination of demonstrations, exercises, and lectures. The studio component of the course consists of projects and exercises that introduce freehand drawing and technical drawing as well as computer modeling techniques. All of these techniques will provide vital means to imagine, develop, and represent your design ideas. Through these projects you will build comprehensive skills both in hand drawing and digital media.

This course includes the study of elements and principles of graphic design to create and communicate your design message. Learn about compositional structure, alignment, contrast, scale and shape, typography, color study, and marketing trends in design. Using the Adobe Creative Suite - InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator - we will be creating a series of challenging layouts. We will also address the medium that your message will be communicated within, to include brochures, magazines, advertising, and having an online presence. We will utilize self-hardening clay to learn about the Italian technique of sgraffito. We will explore subtractive techniques as well as additive techniques to create both two- and three-dimensional sculptures. You will continue your journey into the wonderful world of sculpture as you create a bas-relief after the style of the Ancient Mayan Glyphs, and create an in-the-round Super Hero after the style of folk artist Josefina Aguilar.

Learn how to set gemstones in traditional style settings, including bezel, peg, and prong. We will also explore how to set non-traditional and found objects. Come prepared with objects you might like to set and ideas for pieces you would like to create. Participation in CIA's Back to Basics: Jewelry + Metalsmithing 101 course is a prerequisite for this course. Sawing, piercing, soldering, and finishing skills are also recommended.

This course is not limited to visual artists. It is also designed for business owners focused on the bottom line and writers interested in spreading the word. Each week you will be asked to present on different subjects. Other weeks we will discuss the latest trends and pioneers of sustainable practices. You will discover how nature solves complex problems simply. This class will be as paperless as possible so you are required to have an email address that can be shared with the instructor and classmates.
