Introduction to Blacksmithing

Dates September 21 – November 9 (Wednesdays) – 6–9pm
This class is an introductory exploration of basic metal forging, balanced between creative expression and sculpture alongside the traditional methodology of blacksmithing. After a brief orientation of blacksmithing in both the historical and contemporary context, students will learn appropriate safety procedures, the proper use of the tools and equipment available in the CIA Fabrication Studios, and the process of shaping hot metal. Course limited to 6 students.
Steel Fabrication: MIG Welding
This course will function as an introductory level overview of basic MIG welding and steel fabrication techniques. Individuals will be asked to present a proposal for an independent project to be completed during the six-week timeframe. Large or small, functional or purely sculptural works are all encouraged. The course will cover basic aesthetic and structural considerations, a variety of steel fabrication techniques and strategies, as well as a brief tutorial on the mechanics of metal inert gas welding and proper shop safety procedures.
