Artist's Books: Sequence + Image

Dates September 19 - November 7 (Mondays) – 6-9pm

In this intensive class, students will learn how to turn their ideas into hand-printed and hand-bound limited edition artist books. They will start with basic bookbinding structures, and move into content generation and development. Students will learn how narrative and pacing impact various book formats and vice versa. They will learn to create imagery on a Vandercook flatbed printing press, as well as create low-tech imagery using gelatin plates and stencil techniques for their books. At the end of 8 weeks, everyone will leave with a sampling of binding and printing methods, as well as a set of artist books that are traded in class.

Learn the basics of hand-made book production, including techniques that can be done at home. We will explore a variety of Western and Eastern binding styles and materials by creating journals, sketchbooks, artist’s books, zines, and sculptural books. Students will leave with a better understanding of materials and binding to best suit their goals.
