  • 2012 Commencement

2012 Commencement Ceremonies will take place on Saturday, May 19, at 5:30 pm, at the Cleveland Museum of Art (11150 East Boulevard in University Circle).  The ceremony will last approximately 2 - 2 1/2  hours.  A reception in honor of the graduates immediately following the ceremonies will be held at the Cleveland Institute of Art's Gund Building (11141 East Boulevard).

    • Parking for commencement will be available at the Cleveland Institute of Art free-of-charge. Parking will also be available at the Museum at a cost of $5 per car.
    • Tickets are required for guests.  Each graduate will receive 5 tickets for guest seating in the Museum's Gartner Auditorium where the ceremony will take place.  Overflow seating will be available for additional guests in the Museum's two recital halls where the ceremony will be simulcast.  Tickets are also required for overflow seating.  Please contact the Registrar's Office at 216-421-7320; email: registrar@cia.edu to request overflow tickets to the recital halls.  Overflow tickets will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis.  Graduates will also receive 10 announcements.  Commencement tickets and announcements will be issued from the Registrar's Office in early April.  Students will be notified via their CIA student email when tickets and announcements are available for pickup.
    • Commencement rehearsal and brunch for all of the graduates will take place on Friday, May 18, at 10:30 am, at the Cleveland Museum of Art.  Rehearsal will take approximately one hour with brunch following.
    • Caps and gowns will be distributed to the graduates at rehearsal. Caps and gowns are purchased as part of the graduation fee, so they are the students’ to keep.
    • Diplomas will not be distributed during the ceremony. They will be mailed during the first week of June. Students who have been granted permission to participate in commencement with credit deficiencies will have their diplomas printed and mailed once all of their degree requirements have been fulfilled. Students who have not yet provided the Registrar’s Office with a graduation application are asked to do so immediately. Graduates who do not supply a diploma mailing address will have their diplomas sent to the permanent home address on file. Students should be sure to provide the Registrar’s Office with an accurate mailing address as reprints for lost diplomas will carry a reprint fee of $50.
    • A very entertaining part of the Institute’s commencement is the presentation of images as the graduates go up on stage to receive their diplomas. Details on image production and presentation will be made available early during the spring semester.  One digital image is required by April 15th from every graduate participating in the ceremony. The image may be of the graduate or their work, or the graduate with their work. Whatever he/she wishes. Graduates who need assistance producing their images are asked to consult with their department head.
    • All students who took out loans any time during their program of study are required to have a Financial Aid Exit Interview. Students will be receiving instructions on the online exit interview process from the Financial Aid Office later in the spring semester. Diplomas will be withheld for loan recipients who have not fulfilled the exit interview requirement.
    • All obligations to the Institute must be fulfilled prior to commencement. Graduates who owe tuition or library materials will not be permitted participation in commencement ceremonies. Students owing other obligations to any Institute department or office will have their diplomas withheld.
