PEAK PERFORMANCE: 100 YEARS OF PARAMOUNT PICTURES
 

In 1912 Hungarian émigré Adolph Zukor created the Famous Players Film Company to distribute the French film Queen Elizabeth starring Sarah Bernhardt. This was the start of an entity that, two years later, became Paramount Pictures Corporation.
     During the past 100 years, Paramount has produced and distributed countless memorable movies: sophisticated silent and early sound films by transplanted European talents like Lubitsch and von Sternberg; comedies starring W.C. Fields, Mae West, the Marx Bros., Hope & Crosby, Jerry Lewis, and Leslie Nielsen; Cecil B. DeMille spectacles; Hitchcock masterpieces like Rear Window and Vertigo; seminal seventies classics like Serpico, Chinatown, and The Godfather; dramas and musicals with John Travolta; and much, much more.
     Paramount's history is so rich that we have decided to commemorate the studio's centenary with a special series of ten movies—one from each of the company's first ten decades. But instead of showing the studio's "greatest hits," we are concentrating on overlooked but exceptional films that are rarely revived theatrically. They give a good indication of Paramount's importance.
