KING OF HEARTS

LE ROI DE COEUR
France, Italy | 1966 | Philippe de Broca

KING OF HEARTS film still

The French anti-war film that played continuously for over five years (!) in a Cambridge, MA, theater during the early 1970s has been fully restored for its 50th anniversary! (It was one of the Cannes Classics at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.) Alan Bates plays a Scottish soldier during the First World War whose mission takes him to a deserted French village now occupied by escaped lunatics from the local asylum. These nutjobs have set up their own eccentric society, but are they any crazier than those running and fighting the monstrous war around them? With Geneviève Bujold, Jean-Claude Brialy, Michel Serrault, et al. Music by Georges Delerue. Cleveland revival premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 102 min.
