Long undistributed in the U.S. and still unavailable here on DVD or Blu-ray, this major Bertolucci film (made between The Conformist and Last Tango in Paris) tells of a young man who receives a cool welcome when he returns to the village where his anti-fascist father was murdered in 1936. Adapted from a Borges short story; sumptuous color cinematography by Vittorio Storaro. With Alida Valli.
