American Demagogue
United States | 1964 | Emile de Antonio
America’s most notorious demagogue, the anti-Communist bulldog and bully Senator Joseph McCarthy, “stars” in this subversive nonfiction film culled from 188 hours of live TV broadcasts of the 1954 Army-McCarthy hearings. The inquiry was to determine whether the U.S. Army had been pressured into giving special treatment to a former McCarthy aide, as it claimed, or was merely retaliating against McCarthy for his aggressive hunt for Communists in the military. This minimalist classic, with no added commentary, has more drama and fireworks than a dozen new action movies. DVD. 97 min.
