METROPOLIS (2002 restoration)

Germany | 1927 | Fritz Lang

This is not the most complete extant version of Fritz Lang’s silent sci-fi masterpiece, but it is the longest cut distributed on 35mm film in the U.S. When first released in 2002, it was touted as the “definitive” Metropolis, having collated and cleaned up shots, scenes, and elements from all copies of the film known at that time. The soundtrack consisted of a new recording of Gottfried Huppertz’ original symphonic score. In any version, Metropolis is a visually staggering futuristic epic. Set in a city of gleaming skyscrapers, it delineates the disparity between the rich who lead lives of leisure above ground and the anonymous laborers who toil underground keeping the city’s monstrous machinery running smoothly—until a rebel robot leads a workers’ revolt! Subtitles. 124 min.

Special admission $10; members, CIA & CSU I.D. holders, age 25 & under $8; no passes, twofers, or radio winners.
