Cinematheque . Film Schedule . The Night of the Shooting Stars
Italy | 1982 | Paolo and Vittorio Taviani
In the summer of 1944, on a night when wishes supposedly come true, Italian villagers flee their Fascist-controlled Tuscan town after dark and venture into the countryside to meet and greet the rumored partisans and Americans who are coming to liberate them. The events of this fateful night are recalled and rendered with lyrical, mythic, magical-realist flourishes, lending the whole movie a fairy tale quality. One of the most beloved and moving foreign films of the 1980s.
