Cinematheque . Film Schedule . Eroica (Heroism)
Poland | 1957 | Andrzej Munk
Rejecting the passion and romanticism that was de rigueurfor big-screen depictions of WWII heroism, Polish Jewish filmmaker Andrzej Munk (1921-61) tells two wartime stories full of irony, satire, and bitter comedy. The first focuses on a Polish black marketeer who accidentally becomes a Resistance hero. The second concerns a group of Polish POW’s in a German camp who don’t really want to escape.
