| 1992 | Tsai Ming-liang
Never released theatrically in the U.S. until earlier this year, the first film from the master Taiwanese filmmaker of The Hole and What Time Is It There? is another of Tsai’s studies of urban alienation and aimlessness. The director’s longtime muse, Lee Kang-sheng, plays a disaffected cram school student who becomes fixated on a pair of motorcycle-riding petty hoods and starts stalking them around Taipei. “As a first film, it is incredibly accomplished.” -L.A.
