A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence

En Duva Satt Pa En Gren Och Funderade Pa Tillvaron
France, Germany, Norway, Sweden | 2014 | Roy Andersson

Winner of the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 2014 Venice Int’l Film Festival, this mordantly funny comedy from Sweden’s Roy Andersson concludes a trilogy begun with Songs from the Second Floor (2000) and You, the Living (2007). Like those previous masterpieces, Pigeon consists of a series of painterly, fixed-camera tableaux (37 to be exact) in which pasty-faced everymen enact the absurdist, deadpan slapstick of being human. We see salesmen sell, lovers neck, people dance, drink, and die. It’s a droll parade of human folly teetering on an existential precipice, and it variously evokes Jacques Tati, Wes Anderson, and Samuel Beckett. “Delightfully odd…A master class in comic timing.” –Variety.

Cleveland premiere. Subtitles. DCP. 101 min.
