Fassbinder and His Friends

The Merchant of Four Seasons

Händler Der Vier Jahreszeiten
West Germany | 1971 | R. W. Fassbinder

Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s international breakthrough came with this unflinching tale of a street fruit peddler whose dried-up ambitions and unhappy home life drive him to drink—and worse. The movie marked the emergence of Fassbinder’s mature style, and some hailed it as the greatest German film since WWII. Andrew Sarris went even further, calling it “the most exquisite achievement in German cinema to reach these shores since the Golden Age of Murnau, Lang, Pabst, et al.” With Hanna Schygulla. “By consensus, Fassbinder’s masterpiece.” –J. Hoberman, Village Voice.

Subtitles. 35mm color print. 88 min. Saturday’s screening will be followed by a discussion open to all moviegoers.
