Der Siebente Kontinent
Austria | 1989 | Michael Haneke
Michael Haneke’s universally acclaimed new film Amour (see 5/11 & 12) probably has more in common with his haunting first feature than with any of his others. (Both take place within the confines of one domicile, for starters.) An upper middle class Austrian family with all the modern conveniences finds itself pathologically bored with life, so takes drastic measures. This icy, elegant critique of sterile consumer culture is an unshakeable work of pure cinema. Adults only!
