The Cat and the Canary

United States | 1927 | Paul Leni

This stylish silent horror-comedy, made in Hollywood by German Expressionist filmmaker Paul Leni, created the template for subsequent “old dark house” movies—and for Universal’s horror pictures of the 1930s. Based on a 1920s Broadway hit, it’s a moody movie in which a group of relatives gather in a decaying mansion for the reading of a rich man’s will. The designated heir stands to inherit a lot of money as long as she is not insane—and a nerve-wracking night in the spooky old house with avaricious family members just might send her over the edge!
