Acclaimed FRANK is an offbeat account of a rock 'n' roller with a big head
Michael Fassbender and Maggie Gyllenhaal star in Lenny Abrahamson's FRANK, an offbeat musical about a Brit office worker and wannabe musician who joins an avant-garde indie rock band. This group has an oddball front man who wears an oversized, cartoonish papier-mâché head—not only when he’s on stage singing, but all the time! The Wall Street Journal has called this new movie, which is based on a true case, "a genuine original...a profound examination of what constitutes creativity and genius.” Catch its exclusive Cleveland theatrical premiere on Friday or Saturday. Here's the trailer.

Fassbinder stars in his 1975 masterpiece FOX AND HIS FRIENDS
R. W. Fassbinder himself stars in FOX AND HIS FRIENDS, one of the German director's most powerful and beautifully photographed films. Fassbinder plays an ex-carnival barker who wins the lottery, only to be exploited by his bourgeois boyfriend. Though set in a gay milieu, this is really a scathing critique of class prejudice. See this 1975 classic in a 35mm color print on Saturday or Sunday.

ABUSE OF WEAKNESS, with Isabelle Huppert, tells of a filmmaker & a con man
Isabelle Huppert stars in ABUSE OF WEAKNESS, the semi-autobiographical new film by longtime French feminist and provocateur Catherine Breillat (Romance, Fat Girl, Bluebeard). The movie focuses on a mature female filmmaker who suffers a stroke and then, during recovery, succumbs to the charms of a criminal whom she has hired to star in her next film. (He proceeds to swindle her out of a lot of money.) All this really happened to Breillat a few years ago, and she is unsparing in her depiction of the shifting power dynamics of her relationship with the con man (played here by rapper Kool Shen). John Waters, a huge fan of this 2013 New York Film Festival selection, has introduced it at film festivals in New York, Maryland, and Rhode Island. It premieres in Cleveland on Saturday and Sunday. Watch the trailer here.

Louis Garrel stars in Philippe Garrel's drama of love and betrayal, JEALOUSY
Louis Garrel stars in JEALOUSY, the new French film by Garrel's post-New Wave auteur father, Philippe. Garrel fils plays an actor who leaves his wife and young daughter and shacks up with his thespian girlfriend. This sets in motion a multifaceted drama of jealousy, poverty, love, temptation, and betrayal about “boho Parisians facing the end of marriages, affairs, and the feasibility of bohemian existence itself” (Village Voice). Time Out New York awardedJealousy four stars, saying it "cuts straight to the heart." It premieres in Cleveland on Thursday and Friday. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit of two discount admissions per print-out) Here's the movie's trailer.

1953's WICKED WOMAN is low-budget cult/noir classic about femme fatale
Legendary film critic Andrew Sarris once compiled a list of "The 25 Most Memorable Cult Films.” On it, he called the seedy 1953 noir drama WICKED WOMAN "my own all-time schlock favorite." The movie was also showcased at this year's Telluride Film Festival, programmed by guest directors Guy Maddin and Kim Morgan. Beverly Michaels plays the “wicked woman” of the title, a blonde floozy who drifts into Nowheresville, USA, lands a job as a waitress, and soon plots to run away to Mexico with the tavern's hunky but married bartender (Richard Egan). When a local low life (squeaky-voiced Percy Helton) who has his own designs on our heroine gets wind of the scheme, he threatens to tell the barman’s wife about it. See this neglected poverty row classic in 35mm on Friday or Sunday.

Film scholar Linda Ehrlich introduces Thu screening of Buñuel's VIRIDIANA
Luis Buñuel's 1961 Mexican/Spanish movie VIRIDIANA is one of the great director's most memorable films. It tells of a beautiful and idealistic young nun whose efforts to help the poor are met with selfishness, ingratitude, ridicule, and cruelty. This was the first movie Buñuel made in his native Spain in 29 years, and it was immediately banned there. The film, which plays at 6:45pm Thursday, will be introduced by Linda Ehrlich, associate professor of modern languages and film studies at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Ehrlich edited the memoir of Buñuel’s eldest son and fellow film director Juan Luis Buñuel, recently published as Good Films, Cheap Wine, Few Friends: A Memoir (Shika Press, 2014). (The younger Buñuel worked as an assistant on Viridiana). This special event is presented as part of CWRU's International Education Week 2014; click here for a listing of other events.
