THE PAST is the latest from the director of Oscar-winning "A Separation"
Bérénice Bejo (The Artist) won the Best Actress prize at Cannes for her starring role in THE PAST, Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi's masterful follow-up to his Oscar-winning A Separation. Bejo plays a French wife and mother whose estranged Iranian husband comes to France to finalize their divorce. But matters are complicated by her two daughters from a different father, the young stepson of her current partner, and the hidden truth behind an attempted suicide. The Hollywood Reporter calls The Past "a superbly written, directed and acted drama that commands attention every step of the way.” Don't miss it in 35mm on Friday or Saturday.

Addicts in long-term recovery are profiled in THE ANONYMOUS PEOPLE
23 million Americans live in long-term recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. THE ANONYMOUS PEOPLE is an important, inspiring new documentary that chronicles a grassroots social justice movement in which courageous citizens, leaders, volunteers, corporate executives, and public figures come out from the shadows to advocate for those who, like them, live with this disease. They argue that addicts deserve treatment and rehabilitation more than lectures, stigmatization, discrimination, and prison time. See The Anonymous People on Friday or Saturday. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Watch the trailer here.

Celebrate the season with classic 1959 concert film JAZZ ON A SUMMER'S DAY JAZZ ON A SUMMER’S DAY is a filmed record of the 1958 Newport (Rhode Island) Jazz Festival shot by celebrated commercial photographer Bert Stern. The movie, which Leonard Malrtin has hailed as “a must for jazz aficionados,” features thrilling performances by Thelonious Monk, Louis Armstrong, Sonny Stitt, Anita O'Day, Gerry Mulligan, Chuck Berry, Jack Teagarden, and Mahalia Jackson, among many others. The Time Out Film Guide calls Jazz on a Summer's Day "one of the first and most influential of live concert films," with "a dazzling array of jazz and rock ‘n’ roll giants.” See it in 35mm on Friday or Saturday. Here's the trailer.

Willem Dafoe Weekend is next week! Actor Willem Dafoe makes a rare personal appearance on Sat., June 7. He will answer audience questions after a 7:00 pm screening of Shadow of the Vampire, a 2000 movie for which he was nominated for an Oscar. (He plays Max Schreck, the actor who played the vampire in F. W. Murnau's silent horror masterpiece Nosferatu.) Advance tickets ($20; $15 for Cinematheque members) can be purchased until June 7 here. Advance tickets to this event are strongly recommended.
On the two days before Dafoe's appearance, we will show three other movies in which he stars. The Dust of Time (2008), the last completed feature by the late, great Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos, will show on Thursday, June 5 at 7:00 pm at the Capitol Theatre. On Friday, June 6 in the Cinematheque's Aitken Auditorium, we will show Oliver Stone's Platoon (1986) at 7:00 pm and Abel Ferrara's Go Go Tales (2007, pictured above) at 9:20 pm. The Dust of Time and Go Go Tales are both Cleveland premieres; Platoon is the other movie for which Dafoe was nominated for an Academy Award. All in all, this will truly be a weekend to remember!
