4/24-27: Bernard Hermann weekend with CITIZEN KANE, MARNIE & more!

CITIZEN KANE is one of six films in our all-35mm Bernard Herrmann Weekend! CITIZEN KANE, Orson Welles’ bravura account of the rise and fall of a mysterious newspaper tycoon (loosely modeled on William Randolph Hearst), was for decades voted the greatest movie ever made. To fully appreciate this classic's astonishing beauty and power, you need to see it in 35mm on the big screen, and on Saturday and Sunday you can do just that. The great film composer Bernard Herrmann, who is being saluted this weekend at the Cinematheque, did the music for this 1941 masterpiece that legendary film critic Pauline Kael has called “more fun than any other great movie.” Welles, Joseph Cotten, and Everett Sloane star.

Harryhausen & Herrmann make SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD a journey to remember Ray Harryhausen did the stop-motion animation for THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, an exciting and exotic 1958 adventure fantasy that is on the Library of Congress's National Film Registry and has a perfect 100% “fresh” rating on The movie chronicles the heroic exploits of Sinbad the Sailor, who, while transporting his future bride to Baghdad, is attacked by a giant Cyclops, then runs afoul of a powerful magician. Bernard Herrmann’s score was the first of four that he wrote for Harryhausen movies, and his favorite among them. Sinbad sets sail on Saturday and Sunday.

Hitchcock's MARNIE, with Tippi Hedren & Sean Connery, marks its 50th anniversary Hitchcock’s underrated 1964 psychological thriller MARNIE stars Tippi Hedren as a frigid, troubled kleptomaniac and Sean Connery as the widower who becomes one of her victims, but who decides to marry and try to reform her nonetheless. Bernard Herrmann’s romantic score was the last one that Hitchcock used in one of his films, and you can hear it Thursday or Friday. Print this email and present it at the box office and see Marnie for only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! Here's the film's original trailer, featuring the always amusingly deadpan Hitchcock.

Nick Ray's noir thriller ON DANGEROUS GROUND contains Bernard Herrmann's favorite of all his film scores Bernard Herrmann's music for Nicholas Ray's 1952 noir thriller ON DANGEROUS GROUND was reputedly the composer's favorite of all his film scores. Robert Ryan and Ida Lupino star in the movie, in which a brutal NYC cop on the verge of a nervous breakdown is sent upstate to simmer down and cool off. There he befriends a gentle blind woman whose disturbed younger brother has been accused of molesting and murdering a girl. Don't miss it Thursday or Friday.

THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER boasts Osar-winning Bernard Herrmann score Bernard Herrmann won his only Oscar (beating himself and his Citizen Kane score, also nominated) for his music to William Dieterle's THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER, a visually stunning 1941 fantasy that transposes the Faust legend to New England. Based on Stephen Vincent Benet's famous story, the film tells of a New Hampshire farmer who sells his soul to the devil, Mr. Scratch (Walter Huston). But when Scratch comes to claim it seven yeas later, the farmer enlists the great American orator Daniel Webster to defend him before a phantom judge and a ghostly jury in a court of law. See this supernatural classic in a 35mm archive print on Saturday night only. Special admission is $10; Cinematheque members & CIA I.D. holders $8; age 25 & under $7; no passes, twofers, or radio winners. Watch the trailer here.

OBSESSION is Brian De Palma thriller with Oscar-nomimated Herrmann score At the end of his career Bernard Herrmann composed music for “movie brats” like Brian De Palma and Martin Scorsese. In 1977 he earned two posthumous Oscar nominations for two of his final scores—one for Taxi Driver and the other for De Palma's Vertigo-like psychological thriller OBSESSION. Written by Paul Schrader and shot by the great Vilmos Zsigmond, Obsession tells of a New Orleans businessman (Cliff Robertson) who becomes fixated on a young woman who looks just like his late wife (both played by Genevieve Bujold). John Lithgow co-stars in this film which will be shown Sunday in a 35mm color & scope print from the Sony Pictures studio archive! Watch the trailer here.
