3/28-29: Kubrick's Fear And Desire & more!

03/26/14  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

Kubrick's first feature FEAR AND DESIRE receives rare theatrical screening Stanley Kubrick’s first feature FEAR AND DESIRE -- which he tried to suppress and destroy while he was alive, calling it “inept and pretentious” -- chronicles the exploits of a military patrol behind enemy lines during an unnamed, abstract war. This low-budget independent movie from 1953 may not be 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it’s visually impressive and contains the seeds of much of the director’s later work. Kubrick also photographed the film and co-wrote it with playwright Howard Sackler (The Great White Hope). Frank Silvera and Paul Mazursky star. See it in a new digital restoration on Friday or Saturday.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD is a "guksu" (Korean noodles) Western Inspired by Sergio Leone's classic spaghetti Western The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Kim Jee-woon's 2008 South Korean action epic THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE WEIRD is set in 1930s Manchuria, where two rival bandits and a bounty hunter all vie with each other (and with the Japanese army and a Chinese criminal gang) for possession of a treasure map. This Eastern Western is a spirited spectacle that fills the big, wide screen with horses, kung-fu cowboys, train robberies, chases, and tense standoffs. The Time Out Film Guide calls it "filmmaking as rodeo ride," proclaiming it "thrilling as hell while it lasts." See in Friday or Saturday in a 35mm color & scope print! Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Here's the trailer.
