This gift-giving season don't forget the little cinematheque around the corner
As you buy and hand out presents this holiday season, please consider making a year-end gift to the Cinematheque. We're now 27 years old, so Santa stopped coming here a long time ago (though he occasionally drops by to catch a movie -- and hound us with requests to show The Polar Express). At this point in our history it's entirely up to friends like you to support our operation and our unique, eclectic programming. No contribution is too small, and all gifts are tax deductible. Just click here to make an online donation. (Be sure to mention the Cinematheque in the "Additional Comments" section.) Or write a check to the Cinematheque before January 1 and mail it to the Cleveland Institute of Art, 11141 East Blvd., Cleveland, OH, 44106. Thank you for your consideration, and also for your past support via attendance, membership purchases, and monetary gifts. Have a great holiday; we'll see you next year!

2014 begins with major first-run films, great classics, Nemec and Pasolini series, and much, much more Forty-nine different programs of films—new and old, international and independent—will inaugurate the new year at the Cinematheque. The films fall into one of four series:

  • "Premiere Showcase" (Jan. 4 – Feb. 23) - The first Cleveland showing of 18 acclaimed new international films by Bruno Dumont, Claire Denis, Takeshi Kitano, Paolo Sorrentino, and others, plus major new documentaries like The Square and Let the Fire Burn.
  • "A Second Look" (Jan. 3 – Feb. 23) - return Cleveland engagements for some of the best movies of 2013, plus some miscellaneous classics in new or good 35mm prints, or new digital restorations.
  • "Independent of Reality: The Films of Jan Nemec" (Jan. 4-19) – four programs of classic films by the Czech New Wave filmmaker best known for the once “banned forever” 1968 masterpiece A Report on the Party and the Guests.
  • “Pier Paolo Pasolini: Poet and Provocateur” (Jan. 11-Feb. 23) – a major retrospective of works by the late, controversial Italian poet, writer, and filmmaker who had a distinctive Freudian/Marxist/Christian world view.
