THE MASTER looks at post-war beginnings of religious/philosophical cult
THE MASTER was voted best film of 2012 in the Sight & Sound andVillage Voice film critics’ polls. (It finished #2 in the Film Comment andIndiewire surveys.) This new movie by son of Ghoulardi Paul Thomas Anderson (THERE WILL BE BLOOD, BOOGIE NIGHTS) charts the postwar relationship between an alcoholic WWII vet (Joaquin Phoenix) and a charismatic cult leader (Philip Seymour Hoffman) whose religious/philosophical movement resembles L. Ron Hubbard’s Church of Scientology. Phoenix, Hoffman, and Amy Adams were all nominated for Oscars, and the film has memorable music by Jonny Greenwood. See it in 35mm on Saturday or Sunday.

Tarkovsky's ANDREI RUBLEV is a masterpiece of spiritual cinema
Tarkovsky’s long banned and bowdlerized 1966 epic ANDREI RUBLEV was inspired by the life of a great 15th-century Russian icon painter. This sweeping drama finds the artist and monk losing his will to speak and create after witnessing the barbaric horrors that infect his war-torn, feudal country. Can he regain his voice? Don't miss a 35mm scope print of the original, uncut version of this masterpiece on Thursday or Friday.

WRONG is new absurdist comedy from director of killer-tire movie "Rubber"
WRONG, the wild new film from the director of RUBBER, is an absurd comedy like its killer-tire predecessor. A man awakens one day to discover that his beloved dog is missing. His search to find him leads from one surreal non-sequitur situation to the next. Pretty soon he’s lost not only his dog, but also his mind! Indiewire calls WRONG "a singularly amusing head trip" and says it "suggests GROUNDHOG DAY remade by Luis Buñuel.” Ain't It Cool News notes that it's "just as weird and awesome as you expect.” And Salon labels it a "wry, dry and glittering near-masterpiece.” Catch its exclusive Cleveland premiere on Friday or Saturday. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($6 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Here' the film's trailer.

1948 Japanese drama A HEN IN THE WIND opens four-film series "Marriage à la Ozu"
In Yasujiro Ozu's 1948 Japanese classic A HEN IN THE WIND, a desperately poor woman living in post-WWII Tokyo waits for her soldier husband to come home from the war. But when her young child needs emergency medical care, she prostitutes herself to pay the doctor bills. Unfortunately, her selfless act has serious repercussions. Kinuyo Tanaka and Chishu Ryu star in this drama that will be shown on Saturday and Sunday in a 35mm subtitled print.

Sneak peek of Kasumi's SHOCKWAVES happens tonight at the Capitol Theatre
SHOCKWAVES, the first feature by pioneering experimental filmmaker, multimedia artist, and CIA faculty member Kasumi (2011 recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship), is a darkly comic psychological tale in which reality is revealed as a constantly shifting paradox. The film focuses on a man whose traumatic childhood memories of abuse suffered at the hand of his father send him on a maddening spiral of self-destruction. Catch a special sneak preview of this new movie tonight at 6:45 pm on the big screen of the Capitol Theatre, 1390 W. 65th St. at Detroit Ave. Kasumi will answer audience questions after the screening. Admission $9; Cinematheque members $7; age 25 & under and CIA I.D. holders $6 (though the first 100 people with CIA I.D.’s will be admitted free). No passes, twofers, or radio winners and no Cleveland Cinemas passes or discounts.
