GILDA opens eight-week film noir series
Rita Hayworth stars in Charles Vidor's GILDA, one of the sexiest film noirs ever made. This South America-set 1946 drama tells of a gambler (Glenn Ford) who gets involved with a rich casino owner’s alluring wife. The film’s hottest scene finds Hayworth performing a kind-of clothed striptease while purring “Put the Blame on Mame.” See it in 35mm on Saturday or Sunday.

Man takes a dead man's identity in "Mr. Ripley"-like thriller THE BIG PICTURE
Eric Lartigau's 2010 French film THE BIG PICTURE is a tense psychological thriller that follows a successful Paris lawyer (Romain Duris) as he takes the identity of a dead man and abandons his upper-class lifestyle in France to live as a photographer in the Balkans. Unfortunately his fears of being exposed make him do some horrible things. Catherine Deneuve co-stars in this acclaimed film that evokes both THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY and Antonioni’s THE PASSENGER and has a metacritic score of 71 (out of 100). Catch its exclusive Cleveland showing on Friday or Saturday in a 35mm color & scope print!

Cinematheque presents GREGORY CREWDSON: BRIEF ENCOUNTERS on Thursday night at 7 pm at the new MOCA
We begin 2013 on Thursday at 7pm with a special offsite film at the new Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Cleveland, located at the corner of Mayfield Rd. and Euclid Ave. in University Circle. The movie is Ben Shapiro's GREGORY CREWDSON: BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, a new documentary about a celebrated photographer whose elaborately staged and lit pictures mimic film images (and thus deserve to be seen on the big screen). Crewdson’s cinematic tableaux, which explore the surreal dark side of small-town American life, are realized with the help of a large crew (just like movies) and are fraught with drama and unease. Many of his photos evoke Edward Hopper, Diane Arbus, and film classics like BLUE VELVET, VERTIGO, and SAFE. Ten years in the making, BRIEF ENCOUNTERS chronicles Crewdson’s painstaking efforts to complete his “Beneath the Roses” series, shot in depressed Lee, Massachusetts. Variety calls it "a must-see for art lovers” and it has a very high score of 86 (out of 100) on metacritic.com. Regular admission prices apply (MOCA members can see the movie for only $7) but no passes, twofers, or radio winners will be honored. Advance tickets can be purchased at www.mocacleveland.org. Watch the film's trailer here. And moviegoers can park free in the rear lot of the Cleveland Institute of Art's Joseph McCullough Center at 11610 Euclid Ave. Enter the lot from E. 117th Street.

SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN is a certain nominee for Documentary Feature Oscar
Malik Bendjelloul's uplifting documentary SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN tells the amazing story of Sixto Rodriguez, a talented Detroit folksinger and songwriter who released two failed albums in the early 1970s and then vanished from the music scene. But in apartheid-era South Africa, where his songs and anthems were hugely popular among young people, Rodriguez became a pop icon and legend—though he didn’t know it. On Saturday and Sunday this incredible story will be told in a movie that was one of 2012's very best -- and may well go on to win this year's Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. If you haven't seen it, don't miss it!

Touching, crowd-pleasing WELL-DIGGER'S DAUGHTER returns to enchant
Moviegoers loved the new French film THE WELL-DIGGER'S DAUGHTER when we premiered it in October, so we’re bringing it back. Actor Daniel Autueil, who first gained fame in America in the 1986 Marcel Pagnol adaptation JEAN DE FLORETTE, stars in and directs this new Pagnol adaptation—a color remake of a 1940 classic by the popular Provençal writer and filmmaker. Set in sun-dappled southern France early in the 20th century, the movie focuses on a working-man and widower with five beautiful girls. But when his beloved oldest child becomes pregnant by a wealthy boy she loves, he kicks her out of the house—breaking his own heart in the process. See this moving drama on Friday or Sunday. In fact, print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $6; it's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out)
