Who murdered Marilyn Monroe lookalike in French mystery NOBODY ELSE BUT YOU?
In Gérard Hustache-Mathieu's clever comic thriller NOBODY ELSE BUT YOU , a French crime novelist looking for his next story investigates the mysterious death of a young provincial model and starlet who saw herself as a reincarnation of Marilyn Monroe. This new French film, which evokes both TWIN PEAKS and FARGO, has been called a "particularly droll and satisfying French murder mystery” (Entertainment Weekly). See it Thursday or Saturday.

LA JETÉE and MY LIFE TO LIVE (VIVRE SA VIE) receive 50th anniversary screenings
On Saturday and Sunday we present two French masterpieces that were made 50 years ago. LA JETÉE ("The Jetty" or "The Pier") is a unique, haunting, post-apocalyptic fantasy about memory, time travel, and destiny. It was the only fiction film by the great ciné-essayist Chris Marker, who died in July at age 91, and it inspired Terry Gilliam’s 1995 feature TWELVE MONKEYS. The legendary film critic Pauline Kael once called LA JETÉE “the greatest science-fiction movie I’ve ever seen.”

MY LIFE TO LIVE (VIVRE SA VIE) was Jean-Luc Godard’s fourth feature -- and remains one of his very best. It's a 12-part portrait of an aspiring young actress (Anna Karina, Mrs. Godard at the time) who turns Parisian prostitute. Susan Sontag called MY LIFE TO LIVE "one of the most extraordinary, beautiful, and original works of art that I know of.” See English-subtitled 35mm prints of both films (LA JETÉE runs only 30 minutes) for one price on Saturday or Sunday. Unmissable!

Greta Gerwig stars in Whit Stillman's funny campus comedy DAMSELS IN DISTRESS
DAMSELS IN DISTRESS , Whit (METROPOLITAN) Stillman’s first film in 13 years, is a delightful, literate, and strange campus comedy about a quartet of proper, perky coeds (led by Greta Gerwig) who are committed to saving the suicidal and civilizing the barbaric (mostly dumb frat boys). They also want to start a new international dance craze. One of the funniest and freshest films of the year, it co-stars Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, and Aubrey Plaza.

Miyazaki series continues with eco-epic NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND
Thank you Cleveland for making last weekend's start of our Hayao Miyazaki retrospective such a smashing success! The series resumes on Saturday and Sunday with Miyazaki's breakthrough animated feature NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND (1984). This epic post-apocalyptic fantasy is set in a harmonious valley whose ecosystem survived the devastating “Seven Days of Fire” but is now threatened again -- this time by warring clans and giant insects in the surrounding toxic jungle. It's up to young princess Nausicaä to stop the destruction. Shown in a 35mm print in Japanese with English subtitles.

Mahler consults Freud about his marital problems in droll MAHLER ON THE COUCH
Felix and Percy Adlon's German/Austrian film MAHLER ON THE COUCH is a sly period piece that opened the 2011 New York Jewish Film Festival. In the movie, Gustav Mahler seeks help from Sigmund Freud when his frustrated and much younger wife Alma begins an affair with dashing young architect Walter Gropius. Filled with Mahler music conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen, the film is "very witty and erotic…[a] delightful, artistically vigorous and occasionally loony fantasia about Vienna's cultural elite 100 years ago” (The Hollywood Reporter). See it Friday or Sunday. Note that The Cleveland Orchestra opens its 2012-13 season at Severance Hall with Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst, on Thursday and Saturday at 8 pm.

Takashi Miike's 3D samurai drama HARA-KIRI shows tonight at the Capitol Theatre
Takashi Miike's HARA-KIRI: DEATH OF A SAMURAI is the acclaimed new film from the prolific Japanese director of AUDITION, ICHI THE KILLER, 13 ASSASSINS, et al. A 3D remake of Masaki Kobayashi’s great 1962 samurai drama HARAKIRI starring Tatsuya Nakadai, Miike's movie will be shown in 3D when the Cinematheque returns to the Capitol Theatre tonight (Tuesday, September 18) at 7:00 pm! Set in 17th-century Japan, the film tells of a penniless samurai who goes to the house of a feudal lord to commit ritual suicide. But flashbacks reveal that the disgraced warrior may have more in mind than just a planned seppuku; he may be seeking revenge. HARA-KIRI: DEATH OF A SAMURAI will be shown on the big screen at the Capitol Theatre, 1390 W. 65th St. at Detroit Ave. Regular Cinematheque prices apply, but there will be an added $1.50 surcharge per ticket for 3D glasses; no Cinematheque passes, twofers, or radio winners will be accepted. Nor will Cleveland Cinemas passes or discounts be honored. $10.50 tickets are available in advance here . Free parking can be found next to the theatre and at other lots in the Gordon Square Arts District.
