Cinematheque . Mar 15-19: Kill List, Bela Tarr, Jan Svankmajer, Angelina Jolie & More!
THE TURIN HORSE: apocalyptic allegory from the director of SATANTANGO. THE TURIN HORSE is Béla Tarr's new film and, according to the director, also his last. It reunites the Hungarian master with novelist and screenwriter László Krasznahorkai, who wrote Tarr's previous DAMNATION, SATANTANGO, and WERCKMEISTER HARMONIES. THE TURIN HORSE is as austere, taciturn, and bleakly beautiful as those earlier miserablist masterpieces. It's an apocalyptic allegory set on a remote, windswept plain where an aging farmer, his grown daughter, and a precious work horse cling to longstanding daily routines despite growing evidence that the end of their world is near. THE TURIN HORSE has an overall metacritic.com score of 80 (out of 100) and was a 2011 New York Film Festival selection. Don't miss it when it shows exclusively on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Here's the trailer. SURVIVING LIFE is latest feature by Czech animator & surrealist Jan Svankmajer SURVIVING LIFE http://www.cia.edu/cinematheque_info_current/#6686, the most recent feature by master Czech animator and surrealist Jan ?vankmajer, is perhaps his best movie yet. It's a psychoanalytical comedy that mixes live action and animation, employing paper cutouts to tell the story of a dull, middle-aged married man who has an affair with a much younger woman in his erotically charged dreams. This movie is undistributed in the U.S., so adults should not miss this rare chance to see it on Friday or Saturday. "Dazzling the eye with animation that falls somewhere between 'South Park,' YELLOW SUBMARINE, and Terry Gilliam's work for the Pythons, this manages to be ?vankmajer's most poignant and fully-formed feature to date." ?Time Out London. "An unmissable pleasure??vankmajer is at the height of his filmmaking powers." ?The Hollywood Reporter. Here's the British trailer. Five other Svankmajer features will show between March 23 and April 29. Horrific, surprising KILL LIST: you'll be talking about this one for a long time! KILL LIST, the mind-blowing new movie from Britain's Ben Wheatley (DOWN TERRACE), was one of the most buzzed-about films at last year's SXSW Film Festival. (Bloody-Disgusting names it the"#1 Horror Film of the Year.") An out-of-work hitman who botched his last job gets a second chance with a new assignment involving three targets (at least to start). Things get stranger from there as this tense, terrifying thriller goes absolutely off the rails-and plunges into humanity's heart of darkness. No one under 18 will be admitted to this movie that premieres in a 35mm color & scope print on Thursday and Sunday. LES ANGES DU PÉCHÉ, Robert Bresson's first feature, receives rare screening Though shot in a studio with professional actors, Robert Bresson's first feature LES ANGES DU PÉCHÉ (ANGELS OF SIN)-about a young nun's selfless devotion to the rehabilitation and redemption of a delinquent girl-has a rigor and religious intensity that prefigures much of his later work. Jean Giraudoux wrote the screenplay for this 1943 French movie that the Time Out Film Guide hails as "one of the most astonishing film debuts ever?Rarely have the seemingly opposite worlds of the spiritual and the erotic received such sublime, ennobling treatment." See it in a new 35mm retoration on Sunday night only. Rohmer's sparkling French comedy FOUR ADVENTURES OF REINETTE AND MIRABELLE sparkles anew in new print Éric Rohmer's delightful 1987 comedy FOUR ADVENTURES OF REINETTE AND MIRABELLE consists of four different vignettes featuring two friends, country girl Reinette and city girl Mirabelle. Reinette, an aspiring painter with principles, and Mirabelle, a pragmatic ethnology student, share a flat in Paris but react to the people they encounter (an obnoxious waiter, a kleptomaniac, a pompous art dealer) in very different ways. Catch a new 35mm color print of this delightful film on Thursday or Saturday. Angelina Jolie's IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY premieres Monday night IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY is a love story set during the Bosnian War. Written and directed by Angelina Jolie, this Golden Globe nominee for Best Foreign Language Film tells of a Bosnian Serb soldier who discovers that a Muslim woman he once met at a nightclub in pre-war Sarajevo is now a prisoner in a camp he commands. He does his best to protect her from rape and other atrocities. See the exclusive Cleveland showing of this subtitled movie (in a 35mm color & scope print) on Monday night at 7:15 pm. It's a late addition to our March schedule. Tim Harry's CIFF Top Ten Here are the ten films that Tim Harry, Cinematheque Assistant Director, is most excited to see at this year's 36th Cleveland International Film Festival, March 22-April 1 at Tower City Cinemas in downtown Cleveland: ALPS, BEST INTENTIONS, THE CAT VANISHES, DETROPIA, DIRTY ENERGY, THE FURIOUS FORCE OF RHYMES, TYRANNOSAUR, TOMBOY, MICHAEL, DREILEBEN TRILOGY. Added film: Cinematheque brings BATTLE ROYALE to the Capitol Theatre on April 3 It's been a few months since the Cinematheque showed a movie at the Capitol Theatre. But on Tuesday, April 3 at 7:15 pm we return to W. 65th and Detroit to present one of our most requested movies of the past ten years: BATTLE ROYALE, which is finally available theatrically in the U.S. This 2000 Japanese film is not only one of Quentin Tarantino's favorite movies and among the most controversial films of the last decade, it's also a striking precursor to THE HUNGER GAMES (which might have ripped it off).
