Romantic YOUNG GOETHE IN LOVE shows how young Werther became sorrowful! Germany's most celebrated writer gets the SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE treatment in YOUNG GOETHE IN LOVE , Philipp Stölzl's new romance and period piece. In the film, 23-year-old aspiring lawyer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is sent to a small rural village when he flunks the bar exam. There, while working as a law clerk for a wealthy prosecutor (Mortiz Bleibtreu), he meets and falls in love with a drama- and poetry-loving woman. But she is also being wooed by another-prompting Goethe to pen his landmark paean to unrequited love, The Sorrows of Young Werther. See this new German film in a 35mm color & scope print on Saturday or Sunday. Abused girl flees upstate NY cult in chilling MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE A Michael Haneke-like chill pervades Sean Durkin's singular psychological thriller MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE , one of the best and most acclaimed movies of 2011. (It lasted less than two weeks at the Cedar Lee.) A damaged young woman with multiple monikers (Elizabeth Olsen) escapes an abusive cult in rural New York and goes to live with her older sister and her new husband at their lakefront summer house. Haunted by past traumas (which she keeps secret from her baffled hosts), she struggles to re-enter their normal, "polite" society but soon wears out her welcome. John Hawkes is seductively scary as the charismatic cult/commune leader in this indie triumph that is nominated for Independent Spirit Awards for Best First Feature and Best Female Lead. Don't miss it Saturday or Sunday. Police thriller ELITE SQUAD: THE ENEMY WITHIN is Brazil's all-time top moneymaker José Padilha's new Brazilian thriller ELITE SQUAD: THE ENEMY WITHIN is Brazil's highest-grossing film of all time (topping AVATAR). It is also the country's official entry for this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. A sequel to the hit 2007 movie ELITE SQUAD, THE ENEMY WITHIN focuses once again on the supercop who leads a special ops police unit in Rio de Janeiro. The movie opens with the SWAT team quelling a prison riot with a bloody massacre. This intervention ignites a string of equally explosive events involving outraged human rights advocates, gang-weary civilians, bottom-feeding reporters, corrupt cops, and shady politicians. The Village Voice calls it "wildly entertaining." Be among the select few who see ELITE SQUAD during its exclusive Cleveland-area first-run engagement on Thursday or Friday. Lillian Gish silent masterpiece THE WIND blows into town Lillian Gish gives perhaps her greatest performance in THE WIND , a stunning, unforgettable 1928 silent classic by the great Swedish director Victor Seastrom/Sjöström. (Ingmar Bergman paid tribute to him by casting him as the old man in WILD STRAWBERRIES.) THE WIND, Seastrom's greatest American film, tells of an innocent Virginia woman who moves to desolate dustbowl Texas, where an unhappy marriage and the relentless wind erode her mental health and drive her mad. See it in a 35mm print with recorded music on Sunday night only. Step aside, "War Horse"; THE BIG PARADE is a great war picture about the Great War King Vidor's 1925 WWI epic THE BIG PARADE was one of the biggest hits of the silent era. John Gilbert, one of the silent screen's most popular leading men (and reputedly the primary inspiration for Jean Dujardin's character in THE ARTIST), plays an American soldier who goes to France to fight. There he finds romance and adventure-as well as horror and tragedy. THE BIG PARADE has amazing battle scenes. Line up Saturday to see the restored 35mm print, with a music track, that we will show. Bruegel canvas comes alive in unique, mesmerizing THE MILL AND THE CROSS Did you ever wonder what it would be like to step into a great painting? Lech Majewski's amazing, one-of-a-kind film THE MILL AND THE CROSS lets you find out. Rutger Hauer, Michael York, and Charlotte Rampling star in this visually ravishing new movie, in which Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1564 masterpiece "The Procession to Calvary" comes colorfully to life. In the painting, Christ is being led through a Flemish landscape dominated by a windmill atop a craggy stone tower. He is flanked by cruel, red-coated Spanish soldiers who occupied Flanders at the time, and accompanied by scores of peasants. Majewski tells the back stories of some of these figures in Bruegel's landscape, and the result is a hypnotic film certain to become a classic. Process to this English-language movie on Thurday or Friday night. Print this email and present it at the box office and see THE MILL AND THE CROSS for only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member).
