Cinematheque . Dec. 8-11 The Autobiography Of Nicolae Ceausescu, The Man Nobody Knew, Silent Souls & More!
SILENT SOULS is a spellbinding journey into Russia's interior, and the travelers' pasts. In Aleksei Fedorchenko's haunting and moving new Russian road movie SILENT SOULS , two men transport the body of the beloved young wife of one of them hundreds of milesthrough central Russia. Their destination is a lake where the pagan burial rituals of the couple's ancient Merjan heritage can be carried out. Along the way the grieving widower regales his companion with intimate stories of his conjugal life (another Merjan custom), but the trip has its own melancholy resonance for this fellow traveler. Stunning color & scope cinematography enhances the dreaminess of this journey into the past. Cinematheque Director John Ewing says that this was the only movie he saw at the 2010 Toronto Int'l Film Festival that moved him to tears. It also was selected for the 2010 New York Film Festival. Don't miss it Friday or Saturday when it premieres locally in a 35mm color & scope print. THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF NICOLAE CEAUSESCU: I Am a Camera Subject Andrei Ujica's THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF NICOLAE CEAUSESCU is one of the most acclaimed films of the past two years, with an overall metacritic.com score of 87 out of 100 http://www.metacritic.com/movie/the-autobiography-of-nicolae-ceausescu! In it, the rise, reign, and fall of the longtime Romanian dictator is seen exclusively through propaganda footage culled from 1000 hours of official newsreels, TV broadcasts, and home movies. The film contains no explanatory titles or narration-just film clips of speeches, state visits, parties, public appearances, and leisure pursuits, with cameo appearances by Nixon, Mao, Queen Elizabeth, North Korea's Kim Il-sung, and Ceausescu's wife Elena. Another 2010 New York Film Festival selection, it makes its Cleveland debut on Thursday and Sunday. Former Central Intelligence Director William Colby is THE MAN NOBODY KNEW -- not even his son William Colby was a gutsy OSS officer during WWII and a veteran of covert operations in postwar Europe and Vietnam who became Director of Central Intelligence from 1973 to 1976. So why did this ever-secretive civil servant open up to Congress in the mid-1970s and admit to illegal intelligence-gathering activities, thus assuring his ouster? In the new documentary THE MAN NOBODY KNEW: IN SEARCH OF MY FATHER, CIA SPYMASTER WILLIAM COLBY , Colby's son Carl tries to figure out his often remote and inscrutable dad. It's a fascinating inquiry that features interviews with Bob Woodward, Seymour Hersh, Donald Rumsfeld, et al. We lift the veil on THE MAN NOBODY KNEW on Friday and Saturday. Print this post and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Anybody with a valid CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) I.D. pays only $7 as well. New color prints of Italian comedy classics by Fellini and De Sica show in rare double feature (two films for one price) On Saturday and Sunday we show new 35mm color prints of two Italian comedy classics in a rare double feature! Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren star in Vittorio De Sica's MARRIAGE ITALIAN STYLE , the spicy 1964 tale of a prostitute who has spent over 20 years as the paramour and employee of a slick, successful, single businessman and playboy. She schemes to become his wife. This was De Sica's follow-up to his Oscar-winning YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW and proved another critical and audience sensation. Preceding MARRIAGE ITALIAN STYLE, at showtime, will be THE TEMPTATION OF DR. ANTONIO, Fellini's 53-minute segment from the 1962 portmanteau film BOCCACCIO '70 (which also featured segments directed by De Sica, Visconti, and Mario Monicelli). Fellini's contribution, his first color film, focuses on a prissy, self-appointed moral watchdog who strenuously objects to a billboard promoting milk that features a busty Anita Ekberg (LA DOLCE VITA). Imagine his surprise when the giant goddess comes alive and steps down from her sign?
