Chris Cooper stars in John Sayles' new film AMIGO, a Philippine-American War drama Chris Cooper stars in John Sayles' new film AMIGO, a pointed political drama that looks at one of America's first attempts at nation-building-the largely forgotten Philippine-American War at the turn of the 20th century. The movie focuses on a squad of U.S. soldiers occupying a small, rural Filipino village. There they try to win the hearts and minds of the locals while fighting guerrillas who oppose them. Sound familiar? AMIGO has its exclusive Cleveland premiere showings on Friday and Saturday. Music overcomes adversity in inspiring Congolese music film BENDA BELILI! Shot over five years, the exuberant new music film BENDA BILILI! profiles the Congo's extraordinary street band Staff Benda Bilili (translation: Look Beyond Appearances), who have risen from the mean streets of Kinshasa to the concert halls of Europe. That's quite an accomplishment for an outfit that includes four paraplegics (all polio victims) and a homeless boy (a musical wunderkind) whom they took in years ago. The Village Voice calls the movie "absolutely riveting." You can see it on Friday or Sunday for only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member) by printing this post and presenting it at the box office. It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) BEND OF THE RIVER is second of five James Stewart/Anthony Mann Westerns Anthony Mann's 1952 Western BEND OF THE RIVER stars Jimmy Stewart as a reformed wagon train leader with a violent past. He finds his newly-minted pacifism and respectability challenged when one of his old outlaw cohorts (Arthur Kennedy) joins his journey west. Don't miss "Mann's finest Western" (Time Out Film Guide) when we show it in a 35mm color print from the Universal Pictures studio archive on Thursday and Saturday. THE FUTURE is Miranda July's 2nd feature In Miranda July's whimsical new film THE FUTURE, a passive, thirtysomething L.A. couple stuck in a funk of dispassion and disappointment decides to adopt an injured stray cat. During the anxious month before the animal's arrival (when they will take their first baby steps toward adult "responsibility"), they each decide to do some things they always wanted to do, but never got around to. THE FUTURE arrives Thursday and Sunday. The sky's the limit in acclaimed, poetic indie sci-fi drama ANOTHER EARTH The spirit of Krzysztof Kieslowski hangs over Mike Cahill's thoughtful, melancholy, poetic sci-fi movie ANOTHER EARTH . In the film, the paths of a brilliant, MIT-bound high school student (co-writer Brit Marling) and a married young composer intersect one fateful night-the same day a second Earth (a parallel universe?) is discovered in the sky. Celebrate ANOTHER EARTH day on Saturday or Sunday.
