Cinematheque . 8/12-13: Rohmer's Summer, Tuesday After Christmas & More!
Married man has affair with daughter's dentist in TUESDAY, AFTER CHRISTMAS In the 2010 Romanian film TUESDAY, AFTER CHRISTMAS , a middle-aged married man carries on a clandestine affair with his pre-teen daughter's orthodontist. But he must choose between his mistress and his wife before Christmas. The new feature by Radu Muntean (THE PAPER WILL BE BLUE) is another naturalistic and all-too-human Romanian gem -- and one of the most acclaimed movies of the year (with an overall metacritic.com score of 81 out of 100). Here's the trailer. Catch the whole film Friday or Saturday when it premieres locally in a 35mm color & scope print. Young French woman vacations alone in Eric Rohmer's enchanting SUMMER Eric Rohmer's SUMMER (LE RAYON VERT/THE GREEN RAY) is one of the late French director's best and most moving films! Made in 1986 (and showing Friday and Saturday in a new 35mm color print made for the movie's 25th anniversary), it tells of a young, single Parisian secretary (Marie Rivière) who despairs when a girlfriend backs out of a planned trip to Greece at the last minute, thus scotching their August vacation plans. Lonely and lovelorn, the secretary decides to travel alone. Can this holiday be saved? The presentation of SUMMER is supported by a generous grant from Maison Française de Cleveland. 1977 rarity THE LIFE OF CHIKUZAN concludes Kaneto Shindo series Chikuzan Takahashi (1910-1998) was a blind, elderly, itinerant singer and Shamisen player whom Japanese filmmaker Kaneto Shindo discovered in Tokyo one day playing to a group of admiring students. In 1977 Shindo decided to tell this master musician's remarkable life story, and the result is THE LIFE OF CHIKUZAN, a unique blend of documentary and dramatization that is one of Shindo's most acclaimed films. The real Chikuzan (in his late sixties when the film was made) is seen performing in the movie. But actors portray him as a poor child apprenticed to a blind beggar, and as a young minstrel roaming the roads of northern Japan. See it Saturday night in a 35mm color print imported from Japan by our friends at The Japan Foundation. A second chance to see the our 25th anniversary presentation A USEFUL LIFE If you didn't see the 2010 Uruguayan comedy-drama A USEFUL LIFE during our 25th anniversary bash on Monday night, you have a second chance to catch it Friday night. A USEFUL LIFE takes place at the Uruguayan Cinematheque, which (in the movie) is a cash-strapped institution that makes the Cleveland Cinematheque look like The Getty. Attendance is dwindling, funding is drying up, the seats and projectors need repair. What's the cinematheque's shlubby, middle-aged director-who has worked there for 25 years and who has largely lived his life vicariously through the movies-to do? The answer is both wry and satisfying. This small film, Uruguay's official entry for this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, was made by a young filmmaker who once worked at the Cinemateca Uruguaya. It is infused with a love of movies and of repertory theatres, and stars real-life Uruguayan film critic Jorge Jellinek and former Cinemateca director Manuel Martínez Carril. A USEFUL LIFE is co-presented by the Global Film Initiative and is part of the Global Lens 2011 film series. Print this post and present it at the box office on Friday and see the movie for only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week!
