July 21-23: World Champion 1948 Cleveland Indians Featured In The Kid From Cleveland, Onibaba & More

07/19/11  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

World Champion 1948 Cleveland Indians featured in THE KID FROM CLEVELAND! Members of the World Champion 1948 Cleveland Indians (Bob Feller, Lou Boudreau, Tris Speaker, Hank Greenberg, Satchel Paige, Gene Bearden, Bill Veeck, et al.) come together to help a troubled teenage fan ("Rusty" Tamblyn) in THE KID FROM CLEVELAND (1949), a shot-in-Cleveland Republic Pictures rarity that features footage of League Park, Municipal Stadium, and the Cleveland Museum of Art, among other local landmarks. It will show on Thursday night only. Preceding it at 7:00 pm will be "The World Series 1948," a vintage 40-minute newsreel featuring the Indians and the Boston Braves. Arrive on time and be eligible to win one of two special prizes provided by the Cleveland Indians, including an autographed color photo of Grady Sizemore! Italian Oscar entry THE FIRST BEAUTIFUL THING is moving mother-son tale Paolo Virzi's THE FIRST BEAUTIFUL THING was Italy's official entry for this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. The movie is a funny-sad melodrama about a beautiful, larger-than-life Italian mother. Spanning four decades, the film employs flashbacks to recount the eventful life of this exuberant woman (played at two ages by two different actresses, including Stefania Sandrelli) and the deleterious effect her behavior has had on her impressionable son, now an issue-plagued grownup. The Hollywood Reporter called it "a highly polished crowd-pleaser." It receives its exclusive Cleveland premiere on Friday and Saturday. Horror classic ONIBABA opens four-film Kaneto Shindo series The erotically-charged, visually-stunning 1964 horror film ONIBABA (THE HOLE) is set in medieval Japan, where two impoverished women-a young widow and her mother-in-law-live in a marsh next to a river. There they run a nefarious enterprise-killing wandering samurai and selling their armor for rice. Their murderous scheme works like clockwork-until the daughter-in-law falls in love with one of the potential victims. See ONIBABA in a new 35mm scope print on Friday or Saturday; it's the first of four Kaneto Shindo films we will show over the next four weeks. Here's the unsubtitled trailer. Oscar-winning Best Foreign Language Film IN A BETTER WORLD returns to Cleveland Susanne Bier's powerful Danish/Swedish production IN A BETTER WORLD won both the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of 2010. It's a suspenseful, multi-faceted drama that ponders power, abuse, revenge, and forgiveness. The central story concerns two troubled schoolmates from very different backgrounds who get into even more trouble when they join forces and take on various local bullies. See this gripping film in a 35mm color & scope print on Friday or Saturday. Print this email and present it at the box office and pay only $7 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Celebrate the Cinematheque's 25th anniversary at CIA on Monday, August 8! August 8, 2011 is the 25th anniversary of the Cinematheque's first film screening at the Cleveland Institute of Art. We're marking this milestone with a special film program at 8 pm on 8/8, preceded by a champagne and dessert reception open to anyone who wants to pay a little extra.
