4/21-24: Oscar Nominee Outside The Law, Cell 211 & More!

Oscar-nominated foreign-language film OUTSIDE THE LAW makes Cleveland debut! Rachid Bouchareb's 2010 Algerian/French/Belgian co-production OUTSIDE THE LAW was one of the five films nominated for this year's Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It's a historical epic about the struggle for Algerian independence as waged, not in Algeria, but in 1950s France. The movie (which has been likened to THE GODFATHER) focuses on three Algerian brothers living in France-a militant revolutionary, a pacifist ex-soldier, and an underworld kingpin-who join forces to help liberate their homeland. This is the latest movie from the director of the acclaimed DAYS OF GLORY (INDIGENES) and stars three of the actors from that Cannes prizewinner: Jammel Debbouze, Roschdy Zem, and Sami Bouajila. Thrill to it Friday or Saturday. THE KID mixes laughs with lumps in the throat, in quintessential Chaplin style In Charles Chaplin's 1921 silent film THE KID , the "little tramp" (Chaplin) adopts an ornery but adorable orphan boy (Jackie Coogan). This is a stellar blend of comedy and pathos, in the irresistible Chaplin style. It will be preceded at showtime by Chaplin's 1921 short comedy "The Idle Class," in which a rich woman mistakes Charlie for her drunken husband. Both show Friday and Saturday in new 35mm prints with a music track, and kids 12 & under can see them for only $6. So can grown-ups who print this post and present it at the box office; Cinematheque members who do this pay only $5. It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) CELL 211 is Spain's best picture of the year; it beat out Oscar-winning Argentine-Spanish film "The Secret in Their Eyes" Daniel Monzón's 2009 Spanish drama CELL 211 won eight Goya Awards (Spanish Oscars) including Best Actor, Director, Screenplay, and Picture (beating out last year's Spanish-Argentinean Oscar-winner THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES). It was nominated for eight others! This thrilling prison drama follows a novice guard who gets left behind by his fellow guards when a violent riot breaks out. So he must pose as an inmate to survive. How good is this movie? Well, let's just say that Hollywood is working on the English-language remake right now? Roger Ebert named it "one of 2010's 10 best foreign films." Here's the trailer. Lock yourself down with the whole movie on Thursday or Saturday. Visually stunning THE TIME WE KILLED looks at post-9/11 fear and paranoia In the acclaimed 2003 16mm film THE TIME WE KILLED, a young bisexual writer (Lisa Jarnot) holes up in her Brooklyn apartment, where she grows unhinged over a period of months. The award-winning first feature by prominent avant-garde filmmaker Jennifer Todd Reeves (who appeared in person at the Cinematheque a number of years ago) is a visually-stunning meditation on post-9/11 fear, paranoia, and despair. It receives its long overdue Cleveland premiere on Thursday.
