12/21/10: Year-end Appeal And New Year Preview

12/20/10  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

Make a year-end gift to the Cinematheque! We're sure you're giving numerous gifts this season. Well, while you're at it, please add one more name to your list: the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque. As the place that gives you more pleasure than your spoiled nieces and nephews, and fewer headaches than your nutty in-laws, don't we deserve a little something? Just think of the films you (and the region) would be missing if we weren't around to show them throughout the year. Please give whatever you can afford: 10 dollars, 25 dollars, 100 dollars, a million dollars, 25 million dollars. Just don't go over a billion, please. (Storage space is tight.) It's simple to give: just click here and follow the prompts, making sure to designate your gift for the Cinematheque. Or send a check to the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, 11141 East Boulevard, Cleveland, OH, 44106. Give before December 31 and deduct the amount from next year's taxes. Thanks for considering this request and have a joyous holiday season. We hope to see you in person when we resume showing movies on January 6, 2011. (Above photo is from MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL) Audrey Hepburn in Cinematheque spotlight during January and February Seven classic films starring Audrey Hepburn will be shown in January and February at the Cinematheque. The series "Audrey Hepburn: Sophisticated Lady" runs from January 15 through February 27 and includes ROMAN HOLIDAY, SABRINA, FUNNY FACE, CHARADE, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S (directed by Blake Edwards, who just died), TWO FOR THE ROAD, and WAIT UNTIL DARK. One movie will be shown every Saturday at 5:15 pm. Six of the films will receive a second screening on the following Sunday (start times vary). All seven movies will be projected from beautiful film prints ? no video, DVD, or Blu-ray. The elegant Hepburn was America's foremost sound-film sweetheart and remains an enduring screen icon. Born in Belgium in 1929, this daughter of a British banker and a Dutch baroness became a ballet dancer and a fashion model before turning to acting. Her 1951 Broadway debut in the play "Gigi" (not the musical of the same name) sent Hollywood calling, and she won the Oscar for Best Actress for her first starring film role in ROMAN HOLIDAY. Hepburn was also an ardent humanitarian, working tirelessly for UNICEF before her death in 1993 at the age of 63. ROMAN HOLIDAY opens the Cinematheque series on January 15 and 16. On the 15th, Marcie Goodman, Executive Director of the Cleveland International Film Festival and a longtime Hepburn fan, will introduce the movie. In addition to "Audrey Hepburn: Sophisticated Lady," the Cinematheque will present a wide array of first-run international films in January and February, including a number of movies (like CARLOS, LAST TRAIN HOME, and NE CHANGE RIEN) that are popping up on critics's Ten Best lists. Non-Hepburn classics and worthy second-run films are also in the offing, along with special events, visiting filmmakers, and other guests. Click here for the full Jan-Feb line-up.
