Julio Medem's ROOM IN ROME charts two women's physical/spiritual odyssey during passionate one-night stand ROOM IN ROME, the new film from Spain's Julio Medem (SEX AND LUCIA, LOVERS OF THE ARCTIC CIRCLE), is a sensuous, soulful tale of two young women who meet and embark on a singular spiritual journey-via physicality-in a hotel room in the middle of Rome. Watch the trailer for this mostly English-language movie that Variety calls "beautifully crafted, visually sumptuous, and superbly played." No one under 18 will be admitted. ROOM IN ROME shows on Friday and Saturday. Cleveland hit man spreads holiday fear in 1961 cult classic BLAST OF SILENCE In Allen Baron's 1961 American indie drama BLAST OF SILENCE, a hit man from Cleveland (played by writer-director Baron) travels to New York during Christmas week to rub out a mid-level mobster. (Yes, it's our holiday attraction.) But on the way to bump off his quarry, he bumps into a childhood friend? This gritty, micro-budget crime classic by a painter and illustrator turned first-time filmmaker bridges the world between 1940s-1950s studio noir and 1960s NYC independent cinema. Known and respected by film industry insiders like Martin Scorsese (it may have influenced TAXI DRIVER), this tight, lean movie is now being discovered by audiences. Blacklisted screenwriter Waldo Salt (uncredited) co-wrote the screenplay. Lionel Stander (also uncredited) delivers the unique second-person voiceover narration which film critic Matt Prigge calls "the greatest voiceover in film history." PARADE: Jacques Tati's delightful last film Undistributed on film in the U.S. (the European print we will show is in the country only temporarily), Jacques Tati's final film PARADE (1974) is his least shown and least known movie. Made for TV, it's a gentle comedy set in a small circus, where Tati introduces a series of acts. (He also performs some masterful pantomime of his own). Shown once at the Cinematheque many years ago (the audience loved it), PARADE is funny, wonderful, and in the end, quite moving. Longtime Chicago Reader critic Jonathan Rosenbaum calls it "a sublime and awesome coda to the career of one of this century's greatest artists."
