Cinematheque . 8/6-8: Duck Soup, Mesrine Sneak Peek, The Law And More!
All-star French cast brings gangster's story to vivid life in MESRINE: KILLER INSTINCT On Sunday (which is the 24th anniversary, to the day, of the first Cinematheque film screening at the Cleveland Institute of Art) you can be among the first to see Jean-François Richet's MESRINE, a new two-part crime epic that The Hollywood Reporter has called "a French Bonnie and Clyde." MESRINE nabbed César Awards (French Oscars) for Best Actor and Best Director and was nominated for eight others. Vincent Cassel (heading an all-star cast that also includes Ludivine Sagnier, Gérard Depardieu, Mathieu Amalric, Olivier Gourmet, and Cécile De France) plays legendary gangster Jacques Mesrine (1936-1979), whose notorious exploits and escapes made him Public Enemy Number One in both France and Canada during the 1970s. In the first part of the saga, MESRINE: KILLER INSTINCT , Mesrine is a handsome and charismatic Algerian War vet living in 1960s Paris. Under the tutelage of a veteran mobster (Depardieu), he quickly ascends the criminal ladder. Don't miss our special advance screening of this new film, in a stunning 35mm color & scope print! Screening courtesy of Music Box Films. MESRINE: PUBLIC ENEMY NO. 1 concludes two-part, all-star French crime saga MESRINE: PUBLIC ENEMY NO. 1 , the thrilling conclusion to the Mesrine saga (see previous blurb), is an intricate cat and mouse game between the notorious French criminal and a dogged policeman (Olivier Gourmet) intent on capturing or killing him. Be the first in Cleveland to see this new movie when we present a special sneak preview of it Sunday night courtesy of Music Box Films. Rediscovered 1959 Italian/French classic THE LAW opens Jules Dassin series Gina Lollobrigida, Marcello Mastroianni, Melina Mercouri, and Yves Montand star in THE LAW , a long-forgotten 1959 Italian/French film by blacklisted American filmmaker Jules Dassin, who moved to Europe after he was unable to work in McCarthy's U.S. Lollobrigida plays a beautiful, wily housekeeper in a small Mediterranean coastal town who exploits the lustful desire of a local gangster (Montand) in order to increase her dowry-and thus marry her impoverished true love (Mastroianni). Catch it in a new 35mm print on Friday or Saturday. It's the first of four European rarities by Dassin that we will show in August in the series "Jules Dassin: An American Abroad." Moving pictures really movie, even travel, in delightful ROAD, MOVIE Hailed by the Toronto International Film Festival as a "new Cinema Paradiso," Dev Benegal's 2009 U.S./Indian co-production ROAD, MOVIE http://www.cia.edu/academicResources/cinematheque/filmSchedule.php?action=upcoming#1175 is suffused with a love of movies. (It seemed an appropriate choice for a special weekend celebrating the Cinematheque's 24th anniversary at the Cleveland Institute of Art.) The visually-stunning, Hindi-language film tells of a disenchanted young Indian man who flees his family's hair oil business to drive a rattletrap truck containing motion pictures and projectors-a mobile cinema-across India's spectacular desert to the sea. His encounters with fellow travelers (and a few villains) along the way teach him a lot about life-and the movies. Watch the trailer and then see the whole film on Friday or Saturday. Print this post and present it at the box office and see ROAD, MOVIE for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Hail, hail DUCK SOUP: The Marx Bros at their peerless best! Leo McCarey's DUCK SOUP (1933) is the Marx Brothers' most antic, irreverent, and hilarious romp. It's a satire about two pint-sized, neighboring states, Fredonia and Sylvania, who go to war for no good reason. The celebrated "mirror" scene is perhaps the most amazing sequence in Marx Brothers history. Don't miss this comedy classic when it shows in a 35mm print on Friday and Saturday. Kids 12 & under pay only $6. Anybody wearing Groucho glasses (you can buy a pair at the box office for only $2) saves a buck on his/her ticket price! Films This Week ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND!
