Plain Dealer Reports on the Groundbreaking of the New Gund Building
Cinematheque . 8-13: Marx Bros, Harmony Korine, 25th Anniversary Film & More!
THE COCOANUTS opens Marx Bros. series; "Groucho's Garden Party" Fri night at 6 pm! We open our seven-film Marx Brothers series "No Sanity Clause: The Crazy Comedy of the Marx Bros." with the team's first movie THE COCOANUTS from 1929. It's an adaptation of their 1925 Broadway hit, which was penned by George S. Kaufman and Morrie Ryskind and had songs by Irving Berlin. Shot at Paramount's Astoria Studios in Queens, this early talkie takes place largely in the lobby of a Florida hotel during a local land boom. The Marxes' peerless shtick includes the classic "viaduct" routine. Catch it in a 35mm print on Friday or Saturday. Friday moviegoers are invited to attend a pre-film gathering, "Groucho's Garden Party," from 6:00-7:30 pm in the Cleveland Institute of Art's outdoor courtyard (right off the student lounge). We encourage you to come as Groucho (all you need are painted eyebrows and mustache, spectacles, and perhaps a head covering) but you can also deface your face at the party, if you wish. We'll supply the face paint. We'll also supply Marx Bros.-themed light refreshments (animal crackers, lemonade, tutti-frutti ice cream). Xylophonist Mell Csicsila will supply live music. Admission to the party (which includes a ticket to THE COCOANUTS) is only $10; members, CIA students/staff, and kids 12 & under $8. Film-only tickets can also be purchased. Harmony Korine assaults the audience with outrageous, outre TRASH HUMPERS TRASH HUMPERS is the latest provocation from Harmony Korine, the writer-director of GUMMO, JULIEN DONKEY-BOY, and MISTER LONELY. It's a low-tech assault on sense and sensibilities in which delinquents in grotesque old-folks masks (Korine and his wife among them) run amok through suburban Nashville-dancing, destroying things, defecating on lawns, simulating sex with inanimate objects (like dumpsters and trash bags), etc. Korine has called his movie "an ode to vandalism" in which "poets or mystics of mayhem and murder" engage in "vaudevillian horror." It was featured at the 2009 New York Film Festival. Watch trailer #1 or trailer #2 and if you're not turned off, then see the whole film Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. No one under 18 will be admitted! Serbian-American romantic comedy HERE AND THERE bridges two worlds; meet and hear film's producer on Saturday! A down-and-out NYC saxophonist enters into a business agreement with a Serbian acquaintance: for $5,000 the American will travel to Belgrade, marry the Serb's girlfriend, and bring her back to New York. But not all goes as planned in Darko Lungulov's HERE AND THERE, winner of the prize for Best New Narrative Filmmaker at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. This deadpan, Jarmuschesque comedy-romance is one of the year's delightful surprises. See it Thursday or Saturday. On Saturday night David Nemer, the producer of the film, will answer questions after the screening. Truffaut and Godard to help mark Cinematheque's 25th anniversary when TWO IN THE WAVE shows at CWRU Twenty-four years and 364 days after the first-ever Cleveland Cinematheque screening (on 7/14/85), we return to the venue where it all started: Strosacker Auditorium on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. On Bastille Day 1985 the Cinematheque presented its first movie -- the Cleveland premiere of Bertrand Tavernier's A WEEK'S VACATION, a 1980 French film starring Nathalie Baye. On Bastille Day Eve 2010 (Tuesday, July 13 at 7 pm) in Strosacker, we present the Cleveland premiere of a new documentary about two other French directors whom Nathalie Baye worked with: François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard. TWO IN THE WAVE is the movie, and Truffaut and Godard, of course, are the two best-known founders of the French New Wave. But before they became famous film directors, they were insatiable movie buffs who frequented the Cinémathèque Française and wrote film criticism for Cahiers du Cinéma. TWO IN THE WAVE charts the ebb and flow of their longtime relationship (until their falling out in 1973), and talks in depth with Jean-Pierre Léaud, who gave memorable performances for both men. Since we're charging 7/14/85 Cinematheque prices ($3.50, students $2) to this show, it is our Deal of the Week, and all are eligible. (No print-outs required!) Strosacker Auditorium is located on the CWRU quad between Adelbert Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Free parking will be available after 6 pm in CWRU lot 1A, which you enter from northbound MLK at the light between Cedar and Euclid Avenue. Walk up the stairs and across the quad to Strosacker. (Unfortunately, those who can't negotiate stairs will have to pay to park in one of the lots off Adelbert Road.) We hope to see you all there!
