Cinematheque brings 2010 Oscar-nominated animated shorts to Capitol Theatre On Thursday night we return to the newly restored Capitol Theatre (1390 W. 65th Street at Detroit Ave.) to present the 2010 OSCAR-NOMINATED ANIMATED SHORT FILMS . This great program consists of eight animated shorts from around the world, including all five of the nominees for this year's Academy Award for Best Animated Short Subject, as well as three first-rate finalists that failed to get nominated. The unique, subversive, anti-corproate Oscar winner Logorama (above) is one of the movies you will see, along with the latest Wallace and Gromit cartoon A Matter of Loaf and Death (one of their best) and Pixar's brilliant Partly Cloudy. This program will show in the Capitol's biggest auditorium and regular Cinematheque admission prices will apply. (No Cleveland Cinemas passes or discounts will be honored.) Free parking is available behind theatre and at other lots in the Gordon Square Arts District. Advance tickets can be purchased online at the Cleveland Cinemas website http://www.clevelandcinemas.com/now_showing_mov.asp?ptID=22072. RED RIDING 1983 concludes acclaimed trilogy of British crime films In RED RIDING: 1983 (the conclusion to the gripping Red Riding Trilogy, begun two weekends ago), a cop and a lawyer attempt to close the book on the "Yorshire Ripper" serial killings of the previous decade. But do they succeed? Find out Friday or Saturday night after you watch the trailer. Techine's masterful GIRL ON THE TRAIN looks at notorious French "hate crime" Catherine Deneuve, Émilie Dequenne (Rosetta), and Michel Blanc star in THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN , the new film from master French filmmaker André Téchiné (Wild Reeds). Inspired by a true 2004 case in which a young, French Gentile woman falsely claimed to have been the victim of an anti-Semitic attack, the movie is a nuanced character study of a needy young woman and her cool, detached single mother. Watch the trailer , read the favorable NPR review , and then catch the film on Friday or Saturday night. Every day is Halloween for beleaguered family in doc OCTOBER COUNTRY War, domestic abuse, crime, unemployment, poverty, and teen pregnancy -- sound familiar? All of these societal problems afflict the Mosher family in the Mohawk Valley in upstate New York. This four-generation clan is the subject of Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher's impressionistic, haunting new documentary OCTOBER COUNTRY , which has been getting rave notices (like this review in Time Out New York ) all over the nation. Print this post and present it at the box office on Friday or Saturday and see October Country for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Note that October Country is the first of three movies in the coming three weeks that will show at 5:30 pm on Friday, an unusual start time for us.
