Multicultural Israeli crime drama AJAMI has 96% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes! AJAMI was one of the five nominees for this year's Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Co-directed by an Israeli Jew and an Israeli Palestinian, and reminiscent of both City of God and Crash, the movie is a potent crime drama set on the streets of Jaffa's Ajami neighborhood-a simmering melting pot of cultures, languages, and values. There an assortment of individuals-Arabs, Jews, Muslims, and Christians-lead separate existences that inevitably impact others. Listen to an "All Things Considered" segment about this acclaimed film and then catch the movie during one of four showings this Friday, Saturday, Sunday when it receives its exclusive Cleveland-area premiere. Teenager falls for Mom's boyfriend in Brit kitchen sink drama FISH TANK Winner of the BAFTA Award (the British Oscar) for Outstanding British Film of 2009, as well as the London Critics Circle Film Awards for British Film (and Director) of the Year, Andrea Arnold's raw, realistic drama FISH TANK focuses on Mia, a lonely, needy 15-year-old girl (the extraordinary Katie Jarvis) living with her hard-partying mother in an East London housing project. Sullen, isolated, and angry, Mia leads an aimless and unhappy life-until her mom's friendly and sexy new boyfriend (Michael Fassbender) grabs her attention. On Thursday or Sunday don't miss the East Side debut of this major movie that has an overall metacritic.com score of 81 (out of 100) . It's also the film's first local showing in 35mm. Offbeat Danish thriller may leave you TERRIBLY HAPPY The Danish movie TERRIBLY HAPPY is a Lynchian black comedy and Coenesque crime film in which a distraught Copenhagen cop is reassigned to a small backwater in the marshlands of southern Denmark. There his big-city notions of law and order conflict with the traditional frontier justice meted out by the uncouth and highly secretive local yokels. Don't miss this "witty, expertly constructed psychological thriller" (The NY Times) when we show it Thursday and Sunday. In fact, print this email and present it at the box office and see Terribly Happy for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) RED RIDING: 1980 continues thrilling, grisly saga of the "Yorkshire Ripper" The audience was literally buzzing at the end of the first part of The Red Riding Trilogy last weekend. "One of the best crime films I've ever seen!" exclaimed one dazzled patron. The trilogy's second part, RED RIDING: 1980 , directed by Oscar winner James Marsh (Man on Wire), picks up the story of the "Yorkshire Ripper" six years later. An outsider (Paddy Considine) has been brought in to conduct an internal review of the police investigations of the unsolved serial killings. But it soon becomes clear that he is not wanted, and like the journalist in RR: 1974, finds himself in danger. If you missed the trilogy's first part, don't compound your mistake and skip Part 2! Each of the episodes stands alone. Here's the trailer for RR 1980 , which we show on Friday and Saturday.
