Charles Darwin takes on the world -- and his wife -- in British drama CREATION Real-life couple Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly play Mr. and Mrs. Charles Darwin in CREATION , a new period drama by British director Jon Amiel (The Singing Detective, Sommersby). In the movie the famed naturalist tries to strike a balance between his revolutionary theories on evolution and the relationship with his devoutly religious wife, who doesn't share his beliefs. Watch the trailer , read Rogers Ebert's favorable review , and then see the movie on Saturday or Sunday. In-store lovers walk down the aisles in Uruguayan/Argentinean GIGANTE Some lovers meet via the Internet. In the South American romance GIGANTE , it's a surveillance camera that introduces a shy, lonely, 35-year-old supermarket security guard to a 25-year-old cleaning woman who also works at the store. He continues to watch and follow the woman, but will he ever speak to her? Adrián Biniez's low-key, likable film won three major awards at the 2009 Berlin Film Festival and you can see it in Cleveland this Thursday and Friday. In fact, print this email and present it at the box office and see Gigante for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) McCarey's MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW: a forgotten 1930s American masterpiece Never available on DVD (or even VHS) until The Criterion Collection released it earlier this year, Leo McCarey's 1937 masterpiece MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW is one of the great unsung American movies. It tells of a devoted elderly couple (Victor Moore, Beulah Bondi) who lose their home and are forced to live apart from each other with their callous grown children. Surprisingly hard-hitting and unsentimental by Hollywood standards (it allegedly influenced Ozu's Tokyo Story), this heartbreaker "would make a stone cry," according to Orson Welles. McCarey, a director best known for comedy and uplift (Duck Soup, Laurel and Hardy shorts, Going My Way) regarded it as his finest achievement. Don't miss the rare 35mm studio archive print we will show on Saturday and Sunday. SWEETGRASS chronicles memorable last round-up -- of sheep 3000 sheep-and two cowboys and assorted dogs who watch over them-leave the ranch and migrate to the remote, beautiful Absaroka-Beartooth Mountains in south central Montana for a summer's worth of grazing in SWEETGRASS , showing Thursday and Friday. Made over a period of eight years by two Harvard visual anthropologists who are husband and wife (Ilisa Barbash, Lucien Castaing-Taylor), the film records the last such drive up the mountain and back, as another way of life passes into history. With a 94% "fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/sweetgrass/, this 2009 New York Film Festival selection is one of the most acclaimed movies of the year. NORTH FACE is a literal cliffhanger NORTH FACE is a new German/Austrian/Swiss nail-biter in which two rival teams of mountain climbers-one German, one Austrian-race each other to the top of the unconquered, 5900-foot, near-vertical north wall of the Eiger peak in the Swiss Alps in 1936. But what goes up must come down... The Cedar-Lee opened this lavish period piece and white-knuckle thriller during the Cleveland Int'l Film Festival, so we're guessing many of you film buffs missed it. But this Saturday and Sunday you have a second chance to see it in a 35mm color & scope print on the big screen.
