35 Shots Of Rum, Late Spring, Wild River & More!

02/02/10  |  Posted by Cinematheque  |  Posted in Cinematheque

35 SHOTS OF RUM is #2 on metacritic's list of best-reviewed films of 2009 A widowed father realizes that his beloved grown daughter will soon leave him and begin her own life in Claire Denis' tender and lyrical French film 35 SHOTS OF RUM, the second best-reviewed movie of 2009 according to website (Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" finished first.) Evoking the theme and emotions of Yasujiro Ozu's 1949 Japanese masterpiece "Late Spring" (see second blurb below), this is another triumph from the director of "Beau Travail." Watch the trailer and then catch the movie Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. (By the way, #3 on metacritic's list is "Still Walking," a new Japanese film, also Ozuesque, that plays Feb. 12 & 13.) WEDDING SONG charts friendship between two Jewish and Muslim girls in 1942 Tunis In THE WEDDING SONG , two teenage girlfriends living in 1940s Tunis -- one Jewish, one Muslim -- hang out together and prepare for their respective marriages when Nazis invade and disrupt their plans. Variety called this sensuous new film from Karin Albou, director of the acclaimed "La Petite Jerusalem," "a bold, very carnal take on adolescent female bonding." Adults can see this French/Tunisian co-production this Saturday or Sunday. Ozu's LATE SPRING is Cinematheque Director's second favorite film of all time Those who know Cinematheque Director John Ewing know that "Shane" is his favorite movie of all time. But his second-favorite film is LATE SPRING , Yasujiro Ozu's touching 1949 drama about a widowed father who feels his devoted grown daughter should marry and leave him, though she stubbornly disagrees. "Ozu is one of my very favorite filmmakers," says Ewing, "and 'Late Spring' is the most perfect Ozu film I know. It puts his two greatest actors, Chishu Ryu and Setsuko Hara, in a drama of parents and children, time and change that is nothing short of sublime." Don't miss it Thursday or Friday in a 35mm print. Not on DVD, Elia Kazan's 1960 WILD RIVER receives rare theatrical screening Montgomery Clift, Lee Remick, and Jo Van Fleet star in Elia Kazan's 1960 color and Cinemascope film WILD RIVER , shot on location in rural Tennessee. The plot concerns an official from the Tennessee Valley Authority who tries to get a stubborn old woman to vacate her soon-to-be-flooded land. Critics Jonathan Rosenbaum and Dave Kehr regard this "neglected masterpiece" (David Thomson) as Kazan's best film! It's not on DVD, so don't miss it in a new 35mm print this Saturday or Sunday. GREAT ADVENTURE is a great nature film Not on DVD, Elia Kazan's 1960 WILD RIVER receives rare theatrical screening Two Swedish farm boys rescue and tame an otter in Arne Sucksdorff's exquisitely-shot nature film THE GREAT ADVENTURE , showing Thursday night at 6:45 pm. The now largely-forgotten Sucksdorff is one of the all-time great documentarians, and the first Swedish director to win an Academy Award. His lyrical and dramatic movies about the natural world garnered many prizes; "The Great Adventure" is widely considered his feature-film masterpiece. Print this post and present it at the box office on Thursday and see "The Great Adventure" for only $6 ($5 if you're a Cinematheque member). It's our Deal of the Week! (Limit two discount admissions per print-out) Free Academy Awards event is tonight! The Oscar nominations were announced this morning around 8:30 am Cleveland time. Tonight hear a panel of local film experts (see below) discuss the major nominees, with additional input from the audience. Oscars 2010: Cleveland Reacts takes place Tuesday, February 2 from 7-9 pm in the Cleveland Institute of Art's Aitken Auditorium. Admission is free.
