(UNTITLED) spoofs downtown New York avant-garde art scene Adam Goldberg plays a serious composer of difficult, dissonant music in the acclaimed new comedy (UNTITLED) . He resents his painter brother's commercial success until he too becomes the darling of a beautiful Chelsea gallery owner (Marley Shelton). Variety says that this acclaimed movie, which has music by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang, is "the first film since 'Art School Confidential' to seriously confront issues befuddling artists torn between their drives for personal expression and a demanding marketplace." But it "seriously confronts" them in a very amusing way, as you can see from the funny trailer. See it Saturday or Sunday. Spooky debut feature AFTERSCHOOL evokes the best of Michael Haneke A shy, web-obsessed prep school student accidentally videotapes the deaths (by overdose) of two classmates in the chilling AFTERSCHOOL , the feature debut by 24-year-old wunderkind Antonio Campos. Likened to the work of Austria's Michael Haneke because of its shared obsession with videotape, voyeurism, death, and amoral young people, "Afterschool" (which was shot in 35mm scope) also recalls Haneke in its icy elegance, easily seen in the trailer http://blog.cia.edu/cinematheque/?p=503. Don't miss one of the most acclaimed debut films in recent memory when we show it on Saturday and Sunday. Is Nicholas Ray's IN A LONELY PLACE the best forgotten Bogart film? Humphrey Bogart plays a lonely, weary, self-destructive Hollywood screenwriter accused of murder in Nicholas Ray's achingly poetic 1950 classic IN A LONELY PLACE . Co-starring Gloria Grahame, the movie is also a love story, though one infused with romantic despair. We've discovered that many moviegoers love this moody masterpiece, which is rarely shown theatrically. Don't miss it in a new 35mm print this Saturday or Sunday. Malick series continues with sublime and moving WWII epic THE THIN RED LINE Adrien Brody, Jim Caviezel, George Clooney, Woody Harrelson, Nick Nolte, Sean Penn, and John Travolta are just a few of the stars who appear in Terrence Malick's 1998 Guadalcanal diary THE THIN RED LINE . It's a war film like no other; only Malick would make a combat movie set in a lush Eden and then focus more on soldiers' internal thoughts and memories than on external action. Don't miss this soaring, shattering modern classic when we show it in gorgeous 35mm on Thursday and Friday. ACT OF GOD is new doc from director of celebrated "Manufactured Landscapes" People hit by lightning tell their stories in the electrifying (sorry) new documentary ACT OF GOD . The new film from the director of "Manufactured Landscapes" also considers accidents, chance, fate, and our collective quest to make sense out of tragedy. Novelist Paul Auster and musician Fred Frith are two of the celebrities who appear in it. Watch the trailer It's our Deal of the Week!
